Broome handed Aidan O’Brien a first success in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud with a gallant front-running display under a well-judged Colin Keane ride.

The hard-fought victory capped a brilliant weekend for O’Brien following St Mark’s Basilica’s sparkling success in Saturday’s Coral-Eclipse at Sandown.

Taken to the front early in the race, Broome got into a steady rhythm dictating the pace without competition for the lead.

The challengers mounted up in the home straight, but Broome managed to extend his advantage a furlong out and he kept finding on the run-in.

Ebaiyra and Gold Trip were among those looking dangerous in behind, but they could not get to the winner as they vied for second place at the line.

The winning margin was a length with Ebaiyra just edging out Gold Trip by a nose for second, with favourite In Swoop in fourth.

Betfair Sportsbook cut Broome to 10-1 (from 14) for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes on July 24, while his odds for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe were trimmed to 25-1 (from 50).

The five-year-old has maintained a progressive profile throughout the first half of the year, winning Listed, Group 3 and Group 2 contests in Ireland.

He was runner-up in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and Hardwicke Stakes on his previous two starts before returning to winning ways here.

Keane made his first ride at Saint-Cloud a winning one and told Sky Sports Racing: “I had a willing partner and I kept it pretty simple. Aidan said if nothing was happy to go to make my own running. He’s a very genuine horse who stays well and I was happy to let him roll along.

“He prick his ears, galloped right to the line and deserved it. He’s been very consistent this year and it was nice to get the Group 1 beside his name.”
