Gigginstown dominate The Grand National Trial at Punchestown. Today’s featured €90,000 QuinnBet National Trial Handicap Chase at Punchestown saw a remarkable performance from Gigginstown House Stud, as Coko Beach led home a 1-2-3 for both owner Michael O’Leary and trainer Gordon Elliott. Despite reducing his horse numbers, O’Leary had the five top-weighted runners for the 3m4f marathon, with no reserves for the 12-runner race. Unfortunately, 15/8 favourite Angels Dawn, who was travelling strongly, lost out after blundering at the third-last and unseating Cian Quirke. Meanwhile, Coko Beach, the winner of the 2021 Thyestes Chase, led the way and held on to beat stablemates Death Duty and Defi Bleu, both owned by Gigginstown. Jockey Ben Harvey celebrated his first success for both Elliott and Gigginstown, with the trainer revealing that they had planned to ride Coko Beach more conservatively in this race, as they had been making a lot of use of him lately. Elliott praised the horse’s good jumping and Harvey’s ride, noting that Coko Beach didn’t have to work hard when he got to the front and gave the last jump a big effort.
