DAVID BROWNLEE 50 YEARS AT KELSO NOVICES’ HURDLE (4)

Distance 2m 2f 25y

Prize £4,357 Age 4yo+ Race State Declaration Runners 14

  1. JIMMY CHOU PECOS AA (FR) – This horse has shown promise in its previous races and has finished second on both hurdling starts this term. The form has been well advertised by the winner since, making it a strong contender in this race.
  2. BALLYPOREEN (IRE) – Built upon promise when winning a Musselburgh handicap by 24 lengths on last month’s stable debut. Although it faces stronger opposition and has a penalty to carry, Ballyporeen is still respected in this race.
  3. CHASE A FORTUNE – This horse has been placed on its first three hurdling starts and didn’t need to improve to win easily at Catterick. Although it was beaten at short odds at Sedgefield, it might have encountered a useful competitor that day. Chase A Fortune likely won’t be far away in this race.

BERRYMOSS BICENTENARY HANDICAP HURDLE (4)

Distance 2m 6f 151y

Prize £4,753 Rated (0-115) Age 4yo+ Race State Declaration Runners 12

  1. LES’S LEGACY – Steadily progressive and showed a good attitude to win over 2m5f here (good to soft) three weeks ago with Dillan Hurst on board. With a 4lb increase, Les’s Legacy is still a strong contender in this race.
  2. YOU NAME HIM – Maintained a good record under Brian Hughes, winning at Perth (good) in September. With a 4lb increase, the horse’s improvement on good ground makes it a strong competitor in the race.
  3. HASHTAG BOUM – An Irish point winner on soft ground, Hashtag Boum narrowly failed to win on its first run over hurdles at Sedgefield. The longer trip in this race could be a bonus, making the horse a notable contender.
  4. CONISTON CLOUDS – Won narrowly over 2m3f at Carlisle (soft) a month ago and is only 3lb higher. As a lightly raced 7-year-old, Coniston Clouds may improve further over this longer trip.

15:00 Mon 17 April 2023

SDDE SMITH GROUP HANDICAP (Qualifier) (3)

Distance 7f 219y

Prize £8,100 Rated (0-90) Age 4yo+ Race State Declaration Surface Turf Runners 9

  1. BELHAVEN – Won the 2022 Straight-Mile Series Final (good to soft) and holds a 2-2 record at Redcar and 3-4 over 1m. With only a 2lb increase, Belhaven is a strong contender and is expected to show further improvement this term.
  2. GIVE IT SOME TEDDY – Acts on any ground and is a dual winner of the Straight-Mile Series Final (2018/2019). With four other Redcar wins, including this race in 2019 and a 7f contest on its last appearance, Give It Some Teddy is well treated on peak RPRs and should perform well.
  3. MAYSONG – Despite a poor strike-rate, Maysong has been largely consistent and recently posted a good effort in the Spring Mile at Doncaster. The horse is expected to perform well again in this race.
  4. SHALADAR – Showed good form with a second-place finish at Nottingham (soft) last time out, taking its 1m form figures to 1221212. Although racing without usual cheekpieces, Shaladar is a solid contender over this distance.
  5. LA TRINIDAD – While having no win since 2021, La Trinidad remains on a workable mark and should be considered, especially after a solid effort over C&D (heavy) last autumn.

15:20 Mon 17 April 2023

ASHLEYBANK INVESTMENTS REG AND BETTY TWEEDIE HANDICAP CHASE (3)

Distance 2m 7f 96y

Prize £7,922 Rated (0-135) Age 5yo+ Race State Declaration Runners 6

  1. MAROWN – Despite not being the most reliable horse, Marown showed improved form with a close second at Carlisle (2m4f, heavy) last month. With a workable mark after a 2lb rise and being suitable for today’s trip, Marown could perform well if the ground doesn’t get quicker than good to soft.
  2. DOMANDLOUIS – A course hurdle winner at the start of the season, Domandlouis encountered a progressive rival when finishing as a clear second at Musselburgh (3m, good to soft) last month. Although 1lb wrong today, the horse could be the answer in this race.
  3. SLANELOUGH – Returned to peak form when winning at Newcastle (2m4f, soft) in November but ran poorly in January. The combination of trip and ground should suit Slanelough, but the horse has become difficult to predict.
  4. BAVINGTON BOB – Last year’s winner of this race, Bavington Bob has only shown form in one of six appearances this season. With first-time cheekpieces retained, it’s challenging to predict whether the horse will perform well today.
  5. SAINT ARVANS – A three-time chase winner on good ground last year, Saint Arvans looked unlucky not to win at Wetherby (2m3f, good) in October. However, the horse pulled up on last month’s reappearance outing and has stamina to prove over today’s trip.

AT THE RACES APP MARKET MOVERS HANDICAP (4)

Distance 6f 12y

Prize £5,129 Rated (0-85) Age 4yo+ Race State Declaration Surface Turf Runners 11

  1. TYGER BAY – A consistent performer with two wins at Lingfield (6f, Polytrack) in December, Tyger Bay has been running respectably on the AW in his last three runs. Though weighted near his best, his turf win came on soft ground and he’s still lightly raced in this sphere, making him a contender.
  2. COCO BEAR – A triple 6f winner with a patchy record, Coco Bear was a good second off 3lb higher over C&D (good to soft) last August. Returning from a 182-day break, he has shown form when fresh and could be dangerous if the race sets up for his closing style.
  3. LIL GUFF – With three turf wins (6f, good/soft), Lil Guff’s last success was 11 months ago at Yarmouth off 1lb higher. She performed well at Kempton (AW) on her recent return and could be a key player in this race.
  4. CRIMSON SAND – A triple AW winner who finished as a runner-up at Chelmsford (5f, Polytrack) last month, Crimson Sand is 0-6 on turf but performed near his best over 6f at Newmarket last summer. With the addition of a hood, he should be respected back in this sphere.
  5. CUBAN BREEZE – A five-time winner last year, including a victory over C&D, Cuban Breeze is now back on her last winning mark. Fading in her last two AW runs, she looks interesting back in this sphere and has versatility regarding ground conditions.
  6. SERGEANT TIBBS – A winner at Newbury (6f, good to soft) last May, Sergeant Tibbs didn’t progress in his final six runs for Robyn Brisland but wasn’t far off on Polytrack in December before changing hands. Now 4lb lower than for his win, he could be an interesting market watch for his new yard.

MANNERS LE GARCON D’OR MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE (4)

Distance 2m 2f 25y

Prize £4,753 Rated (0-110) Age 4yo+ Race State Declaration Runners 9

  1. ANIMORE – In excellent form after winning by 12l at Ayr (2m5f, good) last month and now 3-18 over hurdles. Despite being 8lb higher, Animore is well suited to this C&D and should be considered a strong contender.
  2. ATLANTIC DANCER – Recovered from a disappointing run to win at Uttoxeter (2m, soft) last month and posted another good effort when second over that C&D 16 days ago. The slightly longer trip in this race should suit her, making her a likely contender.
  3. LADY HAMILTON – Despite her poor performance on the Flat, she has taken well to hurdling, finishing third in a 13-runner Doncaster maiden (2m, good) last month at odds of 100-1. Lady Hamilton should be competitive again in her handicap debut.
  4. RAE DES CHAMPS – A low-mileage 6yo with a winning handicap debut last March and a creditable second in a valuable series final at the same course (2m, good) later that month. If fully tuned up for this race, she could be dangerous.
  5. RAVENSCAR – Although she didn’t perform well in the series final at Musselburgh last month, Ravenscar won two of her previous three races and will be suited by today’s trip-and-ground combination. She could be a key player if she returns to form.

16:30 Mon 17 April 2023

WEATHERBYS HAMILTON BUCCLEUCH CUP (MAIDEN HUNTERS’ CHASE) (Qualifier) (4)

Distance 2m 7f 96y

Prize £3,593 Age 5yo+ Race State Declaration Runners 5

  1. BALLYDONAGH BOY – Won five points last year and has finished second three consecutive times in recent weeks, including a narrow loss by a head in a ladies open at Friars Haugh in February. He is very consistent and considered the one to beat in this race.
  2. TORNGAT – Previously 0-10 under rules when trained by Tristan Davidson, but recently won two points for his current stable last month (maiden/restricted, both on good to soft). He is in good form and should play a significant role in this race.
  3. INVICKTION – An unchallenged winner of a good-ground maiden point last spring, but has had mixed results in recent point races. He was still in contention before falling in a recent race won by Torngat. Invicktion may have a chance for a minor role in this race.
  4. BARON BRIGGS – Showed minor promise over hurdles last year and finished third of five in a maiden point at Overton last month. He remains unexposed, and the recent outing might have benefited him. Baron Briggs could be an interesting contender.

Overall, Ballydonagh Boy and Torngat appear to have the best chances of winning or performing well in the Weatherbys Hamilton Buccleuch Cup Maiden Hunters’ Chase, while Invicktion and Baron Briggs could be considered as potential contenders for minor roles.

200 YEARS OF RACING OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT (4) (D.I)

Distance 2m 51y

Prize £2,723 Age 4yo to 6yo Race State Declaration Runners 11

  1. SPEED DAVIS – A half-brother to useful jumpers Stradivarius Davis, Violin Davis, and Synthe Davis, he was left clear to win a five-runner Irish point on debut in December and was purchased for £105,000 the following month. Speed Davis is an interesting recruit for a stable with a good strike-rate in bumpers (16%).
  2. HIERACHY – Delivered on earlier progress by just doing enough to fend off a dual previous winner at Ayr (good to soft) two months ago. Although he carries a penalty in this race, Hierachy should still be a prominent contender.
  3. HEART ABOVE – The first foal from the same connections as prolific hurdler Cool Baranca, Heart Above showed promise when finishing third on debut at Ayr (good to soft) in October. He should make his presence felt again in this race.
  4. MARTY MCFLY – Improved on an inauspicious Irish point debut by dead-heating on good to yielding ground last May before changing hands for £46,000 soon after. Despite making his rules debut after a 351-day absence, Marty McFly is still an interesting runner in this race.

Some other contenders to consider:

  1. FLYING SANDPIPER – A £21,000 3-year-old with a half-brother, Exmoor Express, who is a bumper winner, and a dam who is a bumper winner and half-sister to useful winners New To This Town and Thumb Stone Blues. Flying Sandpiper’s pedigree makes him worth a glance in the betting.
  2. MASTER BRICKLAYER – A €31,000 3-year-old with a half-brother, Coole Og, who is a bumper winner. Master Bricklayer’s dam is an unraced sister to 2m4f-3m2f hurdle/chase winner American Legend. However, his stable has only occasional bumper winners.

In summary, Speed Davis, Hierachy, and Heart Above appear to have the best chances of winning or performing well in the 200 Years of Racing Open National Hunt Flat Race, with Marty McFly, Flying Sandpiper, and Master Bricklayer as potential contenders to consider.

200 YEARS OF RACING OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT (4) (D.II)

Distance 2m 51y

Prize £2,723 Age 4yo to 6yo Race State Declaration Runners 11

  1. LUNE DE LA MER – Finished third in an Irish maiden point and changed hands for £45,000. Made the frame in a race here two months ago and should be wiser for that experience, which makes Lune De La Mer a strong contender in this race.
  2. LISNAMULT LAD – Justified favouritism with a clear-cut success in his Irish point (3m) and has joined a much-respected yard. With a tongue-tie added, Lisnamult Lad is an interesting runner in this race.
  3. CARRIGEEN KALI – Improved significantly since her debut, finishing only 4l away in races at Ayr (good to soft) and Carlisle (heavy). Carrigeen Kali sets the standard in this race and should be a top contender.

Other contenders to consider:

  1. NORTHERN CARDINAL – An interesting newcomer from a yard that enjoyed a very good Aintree festival. Northern Cardinal is a third foal and half-brother to French 1m4f AQPS Flat winner Impudent.
  2. CRACKING RHAPSODY – A fifth foal and half-brother to useful 2m-2m4f hurdle/chase winner Cracking Destiny. The stable has a 3-20 record in bumpers in the last five seasons, so Cracking Rhapsody merits a market check.
  3. JEPSONE – Sent off as a favourite for his 2m4f Irish point but was beaten by about 20l. Jepsone is one to watch on his rules debut.

In summary, Lune De La Mer, Lisnamult Lad, and Carrigeen Kali appear to have the best chances of winning or performing well in the 200 Years of Racing Open National Hunt Flat Race (Div II), with Northern Cardinal, Cracking Rhapsody, and Jepsone as potential contenders to consider.

UNIBET 3 UNIBOOSTS A DAY HANDICAP (4)

Distance 1m 3f 219y

Prize £6,281 Rated (0-85) Age 3yo Race State Declaration Surface Artificial Runners 4

  1. TAGABAWA – Justified favouritism on his debut in a Wolverhampton novice and showed similar form when finishing third of 13 under his penalty here. Making his handicap debut after four months off, he is likely to appreciate the longer trip on breeding and should be respected for last year’s winning stable.
  2. MAASAI MARA – Showed fair form in three maidens last year, but improved after being gelded and fitted with blinkers, winning a five-runner novice here last month. With likely even more to come from him now handicapping, Maasai Mara is a major player in this race.
  3. IMAGINARY WORLD – Improved to make a successful handicap debut after 131 days off in a four-runner contest at Chelmsford last month. The extra 2f shouldn’t be a problem based on breeding, but Imaginary World will need to progress again to defy a 7lb higher mark.

Other contenders to consider:

  1. ENOCHDHU – Improved significantly when switched to nurseries last autumn, winning here and narrowly defying an 8lb rise at Windsor. Gelded since and should stay the longer trip, but Enochdhu will need to hit the ground running to defy another 5lb rise after 196 days off.

In summary, Tagabawa, Maasai Mara, and Imaginary World appear to have the best chances of winning or performing well in the Unibet 3 Uniboosts A Day Handicap, with Enochdhu as a potential contender to consider.

MORE PRICE BOOSTS RACES AT UNIBET HANDICAP (Qualifier) (4)

Distance 1m

Prize £6,281 Rated (0-85) Age 4yo+ Race State Declaration Surface Artificial Runners 11

  1. ASSESSMENT – Lightly raced 4yo who narrowly made a successful return from 166 days off a year ago, but was turned over at odds of 2-5 at Chelmsford next time. Gelded since last seen and the market may be useful on handicap debut after another 11 months off.
  2. DOUBLE TIME – Free-going sort who won twice on Polytrack last October and back to form on his second start since wind surgery when winning narrowly at Wolverhampton 18 days ago. Up 3lb, but he only made his debut a year ago, so may still have improvement left in him.
  3. HOORNBLOWER – Open to further improvement now handicapping and shouldn’t be underestimated. Went missing for 409 days after his promising Lingfield debut but proved he still had the ability on his second start back last month.
  4. STOCKPYLE – Half-brother to Pyledriver; won twice over 7f last summer and was having only his second go over this far when a close third of 12 in a better race over C&D 16 days ago. With his second start back from a five-month absence, he may well step up again and is an interesting contender.
  5. TAHITIAN PRINCE – Record over C&D reads 24111 and is just 1lb higher than when successful in the London Mile Series Final on his last visit in September 2021. Has won fresh before, but whether he can defy a 289-day absence is another matter.

Other contenders to consider:

  1. TWO TEMPTING – 1-11 last year but proved consistent; his win came over C&D, and he ended the campaign with a fine fourth of the 14 runners in the London Mile Series Final. Has the form to figure, though his fitness has to be taken on trust.

In summary, Assessment, Double Time, Hoornblower, Stockpyle, and Tahitian Prince appear to have the best chances of winning or performing well in the More Price Boosts Races At Unibet Handicap, with Two Tempting as a potential contender to consider.

GREY-SMITH LEGAL STRAIGHT MILE HANDICAP (Qualifier) (6)

Distance 7f 219y

Prize £3,481 Rated (0-60) Age 3yo Race State Declaration Surface Turf Runners 6

  1. Concorde: Although Concorde only had minor RPRs in novice events last autumn, he has been gelded since and looks like the type George Boughey can improve in handicaps this year. He could be an interesting contender in this race.
  2. Leap Year Lad (IRE): A ten-race maiden who seems to be close to a victory, having finished a close second in 1m AW handicaps at Newcastle and Southwell recently. He is a major player if he can transfer that form back to turf.
  3. The Go To (IRE): This horse showed promise with a third-place finish over the C&D on his sole turf attempt last autumn. He is open to progress in handicaps this year and has potential in this race.
  4. Tollerton Forest: With consistent form figures on AW since December, Tollerton Forest has shown ability at the classified level. Provided she is as effective on turf, she has a chance to perform well in this race.
  5. Zakram (IRE): Despite a disappointing performance at Bath on reappearance, Zakram had success and runner-up finishes as a 2-year-old, including on soft ground. If he can return to that form, he has a fighting chance in this race.

These five horses seem to have the best chances of winning or performing well in the 1m Grey-Smith Legal Straight Mile Handicap, with Concorde and Leap Year Lad as the standout contenders.

  1. Aone Ally: With low mileage and recent success at Doncaster in a 1m2f handicap on heavy ground, Aone Ally has potential for further progress and should be shortlisted.
  2. Flag Of Truth (FR): Although raced only three times last year, he was placed in an AW contest at Lingfield and has been gelded since. He could improve as a handicapper and is an interesting contender, especially if there is market support.
  3. Morning Sun (IRE): While winless in four races for Sir Michael Stoute, Morning Sun performed well at Windsor on good to soft ground. Having been sold and gelded since, he could improve at this new trip and has possibilities.
  4. Richard P Smith (IRE): With a 2-2 record since being fitted with cheekpieces, Richard P Smith has shown promise and could continue to improve in the retained headgear. He is a contender to watch.
  5. Soaring Star (IRE): Although his only turf success came in 2020, Soaring Star had a close third-place finish at Newcastle in his latest AW start. If he adapts well to the new headgear, he could be in contention.

These five horses seem to have the best chances of winning or performing well in the 1m2f Watch Race Replays At racingtv.com Handicap, with Aone Ally and Richard P Smith as standout contenders.

1st SECURITY SOLUTIONS LTD HANDICAP (6)

Distance 5f 21y

Prize £3,402 Rated (0-65) Age 3yo Race State Declaration Surface Turf Runners 5

  1. American Rose: Having won a Wolverhampton maiden in December, American Rose showed progress when going close at Southwell 13 days ago. As a half-sister to fast and slow ground winners in this sphere, she is a big player off the same mark as last time and returns to turf with a strong chance.
  2. All In The Hips (IRE): With a slow-ground handicap win in Ireland and an AW win at Wolverhampton, All In The Hips has shown potential. Although she took backward steps in two subsequent runs, she has claims if she can bounce back near her best.
  3. Deira Star: After a big improvement in her second start, finishing close behind American Rose at Wolverhampton, Deira Star now goes handicapping off what seems to be a workable mark. She is worth watching in the market on this switch to turf, especially with cheekpieces added.

These three horses appear to have the best chances of winning or performing well in the 5f 1st Security Solutions Ltd Handicap, with American Rose standing out as a strong contender.

SKY SPORTS RACING SKY 415 HANDICAP (5)

Distance 1m 31y

Prize £4,187 Rated (0-75) Age 3yo Race State Declaration Surface Turf Runners 8

  1. Forest Demon: Showing significant improvement on his handicap debut at Kempton, Forest Demon is open to more progress on this step up in trip. As a half-brother to slow-ground winners, he is a key player in this race.
  2. Bear Force: Bear Force demonstrated improvement in a Brighton maiden and had an eye-catching performance in his handicap debut at Wolverhampton. He looks interesting returning to turf and could perform well.
  3. Lunarscape: After a big step forward in a Goodwood maiden, Lunarscape has the potential to resume progress now upped to 1m on handicap debut. She is worth considering on her return.
  4. Macho Sun: Despite being down the field at big prices in his three 2-year-old runs, Macho Sun made a creditable second in a classified event at Nottingham. He is open to more progress and is respected on his handicap debut.
  5. Strategia: Having improved with each of his 2-year-old runs, Strategia now switches to turf and, although his opening mark may be challenging, he remains unexposed and should have more to offer in handicaps this season.

These five horses appear to have the best chances of winning or performing well in the 1m Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap, with Forest Demon standing out as a strong contender.
