The ratings are a comprehensive system of assessing the potential performance of a horse in an upcoming race. It combines many factors, including the horse’s recent performance, jockey’s success, trainer’s success, and the pedigree of the horse (indicated by the stallion).

Here’s a general breakdown:

  • Horse Number: The number that the horse will wear in the race.
  • Horse Name: The name of the horse.
  • Total: This is the overall rating of the horse. This figure is an aggregation of different components and represents the horse’s overall projected performance in the upcoming race. The higher the number, the better the horse is expected to perform.
  • Odds: The betting odds for the horse winning the race.
  • LR – 10LR: These columns represent the horse’s performance in its last 10 races. LR stands for Last Run, so LR is the most recent race, 2LR is two races ago, and so on, up to 10LR. The higher the score, the better the horse’s performance was in that race.
  • Lvl: This stands for “levelling factor” which compensates for horses with less experience (i.e., fewer races). This helps ensure a fair comparison between horses that have different levels of experience.
  • Hrs: This stands for “horse score”. This figure represents the average performance of the horse over its recent races.
  • Spd: This refers to the “speed rating”, a rating of how fast the horse has run in the past.
  • Jck: This refers to the “jockey rating”, a rating of the jockey’s past performance.
  • Trn: This refers to the “trainer rating”, a rating of the trainer’s past success with other horses.
  • Stn: This refers to the “stallion rating”, a rating of the horse’s pedigree based on the success of its stallion.
  • Tdy: This refers to the “today rating”, a rating which takes into account any other factors that may affect the horse’s performance in today’s race.

These ratings are compiled to provide a comprehensive and detailed perspective on the potential performance of each horse in the race. By considering a multitude of factors such as past performance, jockey skill, trainer success, and lineage, the system offers a robust evaluation of each horse’s potential for success.

I use the Rating Machine on horseracebase.com to compile the TimeWise ratings. A fantastic site for horseracing data. A must for racing enthusiasts and professionals.
