The Sky Bet Peter Marsh Handicap Chase at Haydock was a competitive and testing race, with soft ground adding a layer of difficulty for many of the runners. The winner, Mr Vango (IRE), produced a determined front-running performance, handling the conditions and the pressure from challengers to win comfortably in the end.
Race Analysis
Mr Vango (IRE) – 1st (4/1):
Mr Vango’s performance was impressive as he made all the running, setting a strong pace and jumping with great fluency. The testing conditions suited him well, and despite some challenges from the second and third place horses, he forged ahead in the final stages and stayed on strongly to secure the win. His front-running style was effective on the soft ground, allowing him to control the race from the front.
Iwilldoit – 2nd (12/1):
Iwilldoit ran a gallant race, always in touch with the leader and making a strong challenge from 4 out. However, as they approached the final stages, the soft ground seemed to drain him, and he lacked the finishing power to overhaul Mr Vango. Despite this, it was a solid effort, and he had to settle for second place. The 12-year-old still showed plenty of heart but may have struggled with the softer going as the race progressed.
Richmond Lake (IRE) – 3rd (7/1):
Richmond Lake was always in touch but had to work harder to stay in contention after a mistake at the third fence. After moving into third at 4 out, he couldn’t muster the pace to challenge the leaders, but he stayed on to finish a respectable third. He handled the soft conditions well but was simply outclassed by the top two.
Trelawne – 4th (11/4):
Trelawne was in a good position early in the race, but as the pace increased, he couldn’t maintain his place. A mistake at 3 out seemed to take its toll, and he faded in the latter part of the race, finishing fourth. It was a disappointing run for the second favourite, but the soft going might have played a role in his inability to accelerate in the final stages.
Imagine (FR) – 5th (10/1):
Imagine was in contention early but quickly found the pace too much. After being pushed along before 4 out, he weakened as the race wore on and finished in fifth place. The soft ground likely contributed to his inability to find any further momentum after a promising start.
Chambard (FR) – Pulled Up (66/1):
Chambard struggled from the outset, making mistakes and losing ground throughout the race. A poor jump at 5 out seemed to be the final straw, and he was pulled up. This was a disappointing effort, and it’s clear that the testing ground was not in his favour.
Royale Pagaille (FR) – Pulled Up (5/2 Fav):
Royale Pagaille, the race favourite, was expected to perform well, but the soft ground appeared to be a significant factor in his poor performance. After a mistake at 13, he couldn’t recover and eventually dropped out of contention, being pulled up after 5 out. This was a major disappointment for connections, and it remains to be seen whether there is an underlying issue with the horse.
Bill Baxter (IRE) – Unseated Rider (12/1):
Bill Baxter unseated his rider at the second fence after a bad mistake. This early exit meant he had no chance to compete, and his race was over before it had really begun.
Overall Thoughts
The soft going had a notable impact on the race, with horses who were better equipped to handle the conditions (like Mr Vango) coming to the fore. Mr Vango handled the testing ground best, showing strong stamina and resilience to hold off challenges from Iwilldoit and Richmond Lake. Iwilldoit, while valiant, seemed to tire in the latter stages, and Richmond Lake couldn’t find the pace to challenge the front two.
The favourite, Royale Pagaille, was the biggest disappointment, failing to cope with the conditions and eventually being pulled up. It’s unclear whether the ground was solely to blame, but the soft going certainly didn’t help. Trelawne and Imagine also struggled as the race progressed, showing that the testing conditions took their toll on many of the runners.
Overall, it was a solid victory for Mr Vango, who managed to withstand the pressure and thrive in the soft conditions. It was a race where stamina and resilience were key, and Mr Vango proved himself the strongest.
