1:50 Leopardstown – Gannon’s City Recovery Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1, 2m, 4yo)

This Grade 1 juvenile hurdle has an open feel, with Sainte Lucie (2/1) and Hello Neighbour (11/4) heading the market, but a few contenders could be underestimated by the betting.

Market Leaders & The Case Against

Sainte Lucie is the chosen ride of Paul Townend, which in itself is a significant pointer given that Willie Mullins has four runners. Her Punchestown debut win (soft ground, strong gallop) was visually impressive, and she’s clearly a major player. However, that form hasn’t been tested at this level yet, and the fact that Lady Vega Allen got so close to Hello Neighbour in a stronger Grade 2 race over C&D might put her at a similar level at bigger odds.

Hello Neighbour is a Grade 2 winner over C&D, which makes him the proven form horse. His winning performance wasn’t flashy, but he responded well under pressure. A strong gallop will suit him, but his price does seem to factor in plenty of his upside already.

Where The Market May Have Overlooked Value

Lady Vega Allen (7/2)

Unlucky to be beaten in the Grade 2 over C&D, losing by a short head.

That was her first start for Mullins, so she’s entitled to improve significantly.

Held up last time – with a strong pace forecast, she may be played late again, which could suit.

Wendrock (20/1)

Won a big-field C&D juvenile hurdle on just his second start.

Elliott’s juveniles often improve sharply with experience, and this is a race he has won twice in the last decade.

Massively overpriced given the race setup – could easily outrun his odds and sneak into the frame.

Sony Bill (14/1)

Only 7 lengths behind Hello Neighbour on stable debut for Mullins.

Had been racing in France and should improve for the run.

Market may underestimate his ceiling in a race like this.

Betting Strategy

Win Bet: Lady Vega Allen (7/2) – A strong-travelling type who ran well in the key form race and can turn the tables.

Each-Way Bet: Wendrock (20/1) – Progressive and underestimated; could stay on late if the race falls apart.

Place Lay: Hello Neighbour (11/4) – His Grade 2 win was solid but workmanlike, and if the strong pace catches him out, he’s beatable for a place at short odds.

Final Thoughts

The market seems to have focused too much on the flashy performances (Sainte Lucie) rather than the strongest form on offer (Lady Vega Allen in the Grade 2 race). With a strong pace expected, it should set up perfectly for a strong finisher, and Lady Vega Allen fits that profile better than most.

At a bigger price, Wendrock looks significantly overpriced for an Elliott runner, and while he has a bit to find on form, he’s the type to be staying on when others fade.
