Fairyhouse 13:55 Rated Chase (3m 110y, Heavy)

·

This five-runner field at Fairyhouse looks competitive on paper, but there’s a standout contender that the market may be slightly underestimating. SA MAJESTE has been installed as the 7/4 favourite, and it’s easy to see why. Willie Mullins’ charge is lightly raced, having only had two starts over fences, and shaped with plenty of promise when winning at Tipperary. Although he found Grade 1 company over Christmas a bridge too far, this drop in class over a longer trip should suit him perfectly. Mullins’ excellent strike rate at Fairyhouse (26%) and Paul Townend’s formidable record here (35%) further bolster his claims.

However, for those looking beyond the obvious, ANY SECOND NOW presents intriguing each-way value at 9/1. Ted Walsh’s veteran has been off the track for 310 days, but he’s a horse who retains ability, as seen when winning the Bobbyjo Chase here two years ago. His course form is solid, and while age is a factor at 13, the small field and expected slow pace could play into his hands, allowing him to settle and pounce late. In five-runner races, with bookies often paying a quarter the odds for 1-2, he represents a shrewd each-way angle in a contest where fitness may not be as significant due to the tactical nature of the race.

AFFORDALE FURY also warrants respect at 5/1, especially with the ‘p’ symbol in his Timeform rating suggesting improvement potential. But with 438 days off the track, fitness concerns linger, and backing him at the current odds feels risky given the competitive nature of this field.

In conclusion, SA MAJESTE is the one to beat, but the market might be underestimating ANY SECOND NOW as an each-way option in a small, tactical field where his experience and course form could come to the fore.

Recommended Bets:
1 pt win SA MAJESTE @ 7/4
0.5 pts each-way ANY SECOND NOW @ 9/1
