2:25 Newbury – Denman Chase (Grade 2) Analysis & Selection
This year’s Denman Chase (2:25 Newbury) looks an intriguing contest, and while the market rightly focuses on Bravemansgame (11/4) as the class act, there are legitimate concerns about whether he retains enough of his old ability to justify favouritism, especially given the strong pace forecasted.
Strongest Contender – DJELO (9/2)
At the prices, DJELO makes the most appeal. His Huntingdon win in December was emphatic, and while his defeat at Windsor last time was disappointing, that was an odd race tactically, and he’s better judged on his previous efforts. The key here is stamina and race shape – he’s been shaping like a stayer, and the stiff test this race promises should suit. Venetia Williams’ chasers often thrive in testing conditions, and Newbury’s galloping track should play to his strengths.
His sectionals at Huntingdon were impressive, indicating he can maintain a strong gallop even under pressure. The 2m7f trip is new territory, but his strong finishing efforts over 2m4f+ suggest he should relish it. With the market focusing on Bravemansgame and Hitman, Djelo looks a value alternative at 9/2.
Market Overlooked? – SAM BROWN (12/1, EW)
The one that the market might be missing is Sam Brown at 12/1. He’s a veteran now, but he showed plenty of life when finishing 2nd in a competitive veterans’ chase last time, and the expected strong pace could bring his proven stamina into play.
His ability to handle deep ground and strong staying power are underrated assets, especially in a race that may not suit some of the more fashionable runners. At this level, he’ll need a career-best to win, but he has fewer question marks over stamina than some shorter-priced rivals. With many contenders either unproven over the trip or on the downgrade, he could be staying on past beaten horses to snatch a place.
Verdict & Recommended Bets
DJELO (9/2) – WIN – Progressive, suited by race conditions, a strong galloper who should be finishing well.
SAM BROWN (12/1) – EW – Stamina assured, will be running on late if the front-runners tire.
Bravemansgame is opposable at the prices, given his declining form and expected strong pace. Hitman has claims, but his tendency to find one too good is concerning. The value lies with Djelo to win and Sam Brown to pick up the pieces late for a place.
