2:32 Lingfield – BetMGM Tandridge Stakes (Listed) – Friday 7th February 2025

·

The market has Maljoom as an odds-on favourite (4/9), but that looks far from bombproof, and there’s a strong case for taking him on with a fitter, more reliable alternative at a much bigger price.

Market Overreaction to Maljoom?

On raw ability, Maljoom is the best horse in the race, with an official rating of 118 and a strong second in last summer’s Sussex Stakes. However, that form has to be viewed with caution.

  • He hasn’t won in nearly three years and has become hard to predict, showing signs of temperament in recent runs.
  • His final two starts of 2024 were disappointing, particularly in the Solonaway Stakes at Leopardstown, where he travelled well but failed to pick up, hinting at attitude issues.
  • His Lingfield debut is another unknown—he’s raced only on turf at the highest level, and this tight AW track may not play to his strengths if he concedes track position.
  • 146-day layoff is a further negative, as he’s done all his best work when fully race-fit.

At odds-on, you’re taking a huge risk on fitness, suitability to Lingfield, and willingness to go through with his effort—he’s exactly the type of favourite that’s vulnerable in a tactically run five-runner affair.

Tyrrhenian Sea – The Value Play at 9/4

There’s a strong case to back Tyrrhenian Sea against the favourite.

  • He’s a proven performer on AW with a 3-9 record at Lingfield, which is a massive advantage at this track.
  • He’s already won at this level, landing a Lingfield Listed race in 2023 before running well in strong company last year.
  • His last run (1¾ lengths second in a similar Listed event at Lingfield) was solid, and crucially, he’s race-fit.
  • Trainer Roger Varian has a 25% strike rate at Lingfield, and Jack Mitchell knows this horse well.

This race looks set to be run at a steady gallop, with Imperial Express likely leading, and Tyrrhenian Sea should sit just off the pace and pounce late, which is the ideal position on this track.

Market Missed the Pace Angle?

One big tactical factor that could decide the race:

  • Maljoom is a hold-up performer who often starts slowly—in a race with no strong pace, that’s a real negative.
  • Tyrrhenian Sea can race handily, which gives him the perfect tactical edge over Maljoom.
  • Popmaster (7/1) is another to consider for a place, as he’s consistent on AW and could pick up pieces if Maljoom underperforms.

Conclusion & Betting Strategy

  • Back Tyrrhenian Sea (9/4) to Win – Race-fit, Lingfield specialist, tactically well-placed.
  • Consider Popmaster EW / Place Market (17/2 quarter the odds 2 places) – Good AW record, potential to nick second.
  • Lay Maljoom (4/9) at short odds – Too many question marks to be this short.

Summary:
If this race plays out as expected—a steady gallop with Tyrrhenian Sea sitting in the perfect position to pounce while Maljoom struggles to pick up from the rear—then the favourite is far too short, and the value lies elsewhere.

Tyrrhenian Sea (9/4) looks the strongest bet on the card.
