3:15 Bangor – A Well-Handicapped Contender in an Ideal Setup
The RW Hough & Son Handicap Hurdle (Class 4, 2m½f, Soft) at Bangor this afternoon presents an interesting puzzle, with market confidence behind The Grey Man (100/30) and The Grafter (3/1). However, there’s reason to believe the former is still ahead of the handicapper and could offer a touch of value despite being well found in the market.
The Grey Man – A Well-Timed Bet?
Trained by Harriet Dickin, The Grey Man arrives on the back of an improving profile, having won last time out at Leicester over a similar trip on heavy ground. That race has worked out well, and he only carries a 4lb rise for a performance that suggested more was in the tank. Crucially, his HRB rating of 276 is the highest in the field, indicating he’s potentially well-treated off 105.
The likely weak pace plays into his hands. He’s adaptable tactically, and with Risk D’Argent and Clinton Lane expected to force the pace, he should get a perfect stalking trip before being produced late by Bradley Harris, who claims 3lb and continues to impress in the saddle.
Market Overlooking a Bangor Specialist?
While The Grey Man makes plenty of appeal at the front of the market, Feel The Pinch (12/1) looks an interesting each-way alternative that the market may have underestimated. He’s an 11-year-old, which won’t excite everyone, but he’s a four-time Bangor winner, a course that often favours repeat performers. He’s been slightly below his best in recent outings but ran fourth behind The Grey Man at Leicester, and if he’s able to travel in touch early, he could hit the frame at a price.
Verdict
At the prices, The Grey Man (100/30) looks a strong bet, with his progressive profile, ideal race positioning, and well-treated mark making him the one to beat. Feel The Pinch (12/1) is an interesting outsider at a track where he’s excelled before, and a weakly run race could see him sneak into the places.
Wouldn’t put anyone off a win bet on The Grey Man and a small each-way saver on Feel The Pinch in case experience counts for more than the market anticipates.
