5:45 Southwell – A Strong Contender That The Market May Have Missed

·

Tonight’s 5:45 Southwell (6f Handicap, Class 4, 7 runners, Standard) lacks obvious pace, which could prove crucial in determining the outcome. With only seven runners, each-way value is limited, making it a race where identifying a strong win candidate is key.

The market has rightly installed Stanley Spencer (13/8) as favourite, and he has an obvious chance based on recent form. He’s a course winner, well drawn, and should be ideally placed in a race lacking early speed. However, at his current price, any slight negatives—such as his 58-day layoff—make him less appealing from a value perspective.

The Market May Be Underestimating Many A Star (4/1)

One horse that could have been underestimated by the market is Many A Star. He won over this course and distance just 14 days ago, beating Ormolulu by ½ length. That win came in a strongly run race, which isn’t necessarily the scenario he’ll get today, but what makes him of particular interest is his draw in Stall 1.

  • Tactically, this could be crucial – he can hold a forward position in a race where front-runners are scarce.
  • Last time, he raced more prominently than usual, and a similar ride could put him in pole position to capitalise if the race turns tactical.
  • His strike rate at Southwell is strong (30%), and the tongue tie seemed to help last time.

Many A Star’s mark of 84 is still workable, and despite being an 8yo, he has been running consistently well. Given that Stanley Spencer is returning from a break and will have to be fully wound up, the value play could be to back Many A Star to win at 4/1 rather than taking the shorter price on the favourite.

Betting Recommendation

  • Many A Star – WIN (4/1) (Could control the race from Stall 1 in a pace-weak contest.)
  • Forecast: Many A Star to beat Stanley Spencer (If the favourite isn’t at peak fitness, this looks the logical reverse.)

If Many A Star is allowed to dictate or race prominently, he may prove difficult to peg back in a race lacking obvious pace-setters—and that’s an angle the market may have slightly overlooked.

    1. Thanks Graeme. I try to take on the favourite when I can. Doesn’t always work out of course.
