14:30 Exeter – Novices’ Hurdle (Listed) – Sunday, 9th February 2025

·

This looks a fascinating Listed contest, with Regent’s Stroll (10/11) setting the standard after an eye-catching run in the Challow Hurdle at Newbury. Paul Nicholls’ six-year-old lost his unbeaten record there but still shaped with plenty of promise, making a strong move before fading late over a trip that may have stretched him. Dropping back to 2m161y on ground that should suit, he’s clearly the one to beat, but at the prices, there may be better value elsewhere.

The Value Alternative: Alexei (3/1)

While Regent’s Stroll is the most likely winner, Alexei (3/1) offers a credible challenge and might just be the horse the market is slightly underestimating. Joe Tizzard’s gelding has looked a smart prospect in two hurdles runs so far, bolting up by 25L on debut before following up in a novice at Taunton. Both runs came on good ground, so there’s a slight query about how he’ll handle softer patches, but he’s a strong traveller, and with a weak pace forecast, that could play into his hands. If this turns tactical, Brendan Powell’s mount has a turn of foot that could prove crucial.

One That Could Be Overlooked: Fingle Bridge (9/1)

The market suggests this is a two-horse race, but Fingle Bridge (9/1) is more interesting than his odds imply. A €70,000 purchase with a good pedigree, he’s made a bright start over hurdles for Olly Murphy, winning both starts since returning from a long absence. His most recent success at Market Rasen wasn’t flashy, but he had to work harder there than in his 8L Uttoxeter win the time before, suggesting there’s more in the locker. Crucially, he’s shown a good ability to quicken off a steady pace, which could be an asset here. Sean Bowen’s booking is a plus, and if Regent’s Stroll and Alexei disappoint, he’s the most likely to pick up the pieces.

Conclusion

Regent’s Stroll is the most talented horse in the field, but he’s not bombproof at odds-on, and Alexei could pose a genuine threat if it becomes a tactical affair. Fingle Bridge is the forgotten horse of the race, and with more improvement likely, he’s worth considering as an each-way play at a fair price.

Bets:

Win bet: Alexei (3/1) – Strong traveller, better suited to the expected race setup.

Each-way: Fingle Bridge (9/1) – Could take advantage if the front two underperform.
