🏇 1m 7f 156y | Good (Good to Soft in places) | 7 Runners
This is a competitive-looking handicap hurdle, but one runner stands out as a strong bet at the current prices.
🎯 Best Bet: HAARAR (7/2)
Sam England’s Haarar shaped much better than the bare result when second at Carlisle last week, looking the likely winner before getting collared in the dying strides. That performance came in a race run at a strong gallop, and the fact he was still in control between the last two flights suggests he is ahead of his current mark (103).
He now runs off the same rating in a slightly weaker race, and with the early pace unlikely to be too frenetic, he should travel strongly into contention. His previous hurdles win at Cartmel (May 2024) came on softer ground, and while today’s conditions will be slightly quicker, his Flat form suggests he’ll have no issue on good ground.
Jonathan England keeps the ride, and with a more efficient finishing effort, he should be very hard to beat. 7/2 looks a fair price, with a strong chance of shortening before the off.
📈 Market Sleeper: BATHGATE (11/2)
One horse that looks a touch underestimated by the market is Philip Kirby’s Bathgate, who comes here off the back of a smooth victory at this track last time out.
He travelled like a horse ahead of his mark that day before quickening clear, and the form has a solid look to it. The runner-up, Far Away West, was a fair yardstick at this level, and Bathgate’s winning time was one of the better performances on the Catterick hurdles track this season.
Joe Williamson’s 3lb claim keeps him well-treated, and while this is a step up in class, he remains progressive and will appreciate any softening of the ground. With several in this field holding question marks over their finishing effort (Nowmelad and Damarta both have stamina concerns), Bathgate could hit the frame at rewarding odds.
Race Outlook:
The current favourite, It’s All About You (5/2), is respected, having won his last two in facile fashion, but this represents a sterner test. He had the run of the race in a small field last time, and it’s notable that his jumping under pressure remains an unknown.
Nowmelad (11/4) is another front-runner, and while he’s consistent, he faces pace pressure from Allbetsoff, which could set things up for strong finishers like Haarar and Bathgate.
Recommended Bets:
🏆 Back HAARAR (7/2) to win – Well-handicapped, strong form, race setup suits.
💰 Back BATHGATE (11/2) each-way – Improving, last-time-out winner, underrated by the market.
🚨 Oppose NOWMELAD (11/4) – Could be vulnerable late on.
With conditions likely to suit and the pace shaping up well for strong closers, Haarar rates a strong bet at 7/2, while Bathgate looks the best value play at current odds.
