Race Review: 15:45 Navan – William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed Novice Chase (Grade 2)

Distance: 3m (5235 yards) | Going: Soft To Heavy | Fences: 17
Winner’s Time: 6m 47.00s

Final Result

1ļøāƒ£ Better Days Ahead (7yo, 11-3, OR 152) – 1/2 Fav
Tracked the leader in second, took the lead 4 out, was strongly pressed inside the final furlong but found enough to hold off the challenge. A solid performance, especially in tough ground conditions.

2ļøāƒ£ Stellar Story (8yo, 11-8, OR N/A) – 13/2
Held up last, made headway 2 out, challenged strongly in the final furlong but couldn’t quite get past. Strong effort, but couldn’t overhaul the winner. Looked to be travelling best before the last.

3ļøāƒ£ Three Card Brag (8yo, 11-3, OR 147) – 7/2
Led early, made a bad mistake at the 12th fence, lost lead at the 4th last, weakened in the final stages. Jumping errors proved costly.

4ļøāƒ£ Arctic Skua (8yo, 11-3, OR N/A) – 300/1
Kept pace early, left in third 4 out but faded quickly. Outclassed.

āŒ Chosen Witness (8yo, 11-3, OR N/A) – 10/1
Travelled keenly, moved into contention but unseated rider at 4 out.

Race Analysis & Key Takeaways

Better Days Ahead justified favouritism with a determined victory, confirming his class on testing ground. He had to battle to fend off Stellar Story, but showed resilience in the finish.

Stellar Story travelled like a potential winner and was perhaps unlucky not to get past. With a cleaner run and possibly better ground, he could be of interest next time.

Three Card Brag made a costly mistake at the 12th fence, which seemed to blunt his finishing effort. If he tidies up his jumping, he could be a stronger contender in a similar race.

Chosen Witness was still in contention when unseating – not a guarantee that he would have troubled the winner, but one to note next time, especially if jumping better.

Future Betting Angles

āœ” Stellar Story – One for next time if conditions and race dynamics suit. Travelled well and had more to give at the finish.
āœ” Three Card Brag – Jumping needs improvement, but has the ability to go well in similar Grade 2 events.
āœ” Better Days Ahead – Continues to progress well and could be a contender at Cheltenham if targeting a staying chase.
