16:55 Ayr – Virgin Bet Mares’ Open NH Flat (Class 4) – 2m – Soft

·

The market has latched onto Gintime as the obvious favourite, and it’s easy to see why. She shaped very well when second at Carlisle, finishing 3¼ lengths behind a useful winner, pulling well clear of the remainder. That run came on soft ground over 17f, so conditions here should be no issue, and she represents a stable in strong form. On paper, she’s the one to beat, but whether she offers much value at odds-on is another matter entirely.

From a pace perspective, this looks a weakly-run race, which could play into the hands of a well-positioned, forward-going type. Hunters Spring made all to win a small-field event at Newcastle, but that was on good ground in a steadily-run contest, so whether she can dictate on this softer surface remains to be seen.

One horse who could be underestimated by the market is OH JANEY (11/2). She represents Stuart Crawford, a trainer with a £25.94 profit to a £1 level stake with bumper debutants – a hugely significant angle, given that she makes her rules debut here. While point-to-point form is often hard to quantify, her pedigree suggests she could be suited by these conditions. The booking of JJ Slevin is also a plus, as he’s been riding well for the yard in these types of events. If she’s fit and ready, there’s every chance she could outrun her odds.

At a bigger price, MY MY MY DELILAH (20/1) could also be worth a small interest. She finished fourth on debut at Sedgefield, beaten 8½ lengths, but that was a promising effort considering she was green and the pace wasn’t overly strong. She could improve significantly from that, and the soft ground should suit based on pedigree. If she’s ridden more prominently here, she could grab a place at rewarding odds.

Verdict

  • Main selection: OH JANEY (11/2) – Market underestimating her potential, strong bumper debutant angle.
  • Strong favourite: GINTIME (4/5) – The most likely winner, but little value at the price.
  • Value each-way: MY MY MY DELILAH (20/1) – Could step forward from debut effort and sneak a place.

Betting approach:

  • OH JANEY (Win bet at 11/2, place saver at 2.1+)
  • Small each-way bet on MY MY MY DELILAH (20/1)

A race where Gintime is the one to beat, but the market hasn’t fully accounted for the debutant potential of OH JANEY, while MY MY MY DELILAH is overpriced relative to her first run.
