2:40 Leicester – MHA Baker Tilly Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (Class 3, 2m Soft/Heavy in places)

·

A small-field novice handicap chase where tactical speed and jumping fluency will be key, particularly given the likelihood of a steady gallop. The market suggests a two-horse race between Bucksy Des Epeires and Classic Maestro, but there could be more to this than the betting implies.

The Likely Favourite: Bucksy Des Epeires (11/8)

It’s easy to see why Bucksy Des Epeires heads the market. His Ascot win in November saw him beat Rare Edition (who has since franked the form), and he was clear of the remainder when second at Doncaster last time. That race was run at a solid gallop, which suited his strong-staying tendencies, but the concern here is a likely tactical affair that may not play to his strengths. He’ll be reliant on Charlie Deutsch forcing the pace or getting him into a good rhythm early, but he may not have things his own way.

The Strongest Contender: Classic Maestro (7/4)

Classic Maestro is a tough and consistent type who has thrived since switching to fences. His record on soft/heavy ground over this trip is strong, and his last run at Sandown was better than it looked—he was beaten just over four lengths in a much stronger race than this. He’s a confirmed front-runner, which is a huge advantage in this small field, particularly if he can dictate at his own tempo.

A further positive is that his conditional jockey, Luke Scott (5lb claim), has been riding well, and his mount is well-handicapped off 129, considering the strength of his previous chase form. If he jumps fluently and gets into a rhythm in front, he could take plenty of pegging back.

Potential Market Overlooked Runner: Denemethy (11/2)

With a slight drift in the market, Denemethy is one that could outrun his odds. He’s been progressing over fences and ran respectably when third at Exeter last time in testing conditions. While he may not have the class of the front two in the market, his trainer, Fergal O’Brien, is in flying form, and he’s one of the few in here who won’t mind if this turns tactical.

The concern is whether he has the raw pace for a 2m event at this level, but if stamina comes into play late, he might be the one finishing best of all.

Final Call

Best Bet: Classic Maestro (7/4) – Tactically advantaged, strong chase form, proven in conditions.
⚠️ Value Angle: Denemethy (11/2) – Could pick up the pieces if they go too slow.

Bucksy Des Epeires is clearly talented, but the pace scenario and race setup don’t look ideal for him at the prices. Classic Maestro makes the most appeal, and if there’s a bigger-priced danger, Denemethy is the one most likely to take advantage of any pace misjudgment.
