With just five runners set to go to post, this mares’ handicap chase could prove to be a tactical affair. The pace forecast suggests a very weak early gallop, meaning prominent racers could be at a distinct advantage.

LARGY FORCE (15/8) looks the most solid contender, both from a tactical and form perspective. She has shaped well in novice handicaps, particularly when staying on strongly for third at Hereford in December. The slow pace today should play into her hands, allowing her to sit prominently without having to expend too much energy early. The market support this evening only reinforces confidence, and she has the right profile to progress further over this trip.

MISS MAVERICK (3/1) is also worthy of respect. Her latest effort at Uttoxeter saw her force the pace on testing ground before fading late, but she had previously racked up an impressive hat-trick over hurdles. The key question is whether her chase form will translate as well as her hurdle form. She has proven heavy-ground form and, if allowed an uncontested lead, could have a say.

One runner the market might be underestimating is OAKLEY DANCER (4/1). Although not as strongly fancied as the front two in the betting, she wasn’t beaten far on her chase debut and has acted well on testing ground in the past. If she improves for her first run over fences, she could surprise a few people.

Conversely, ITS EASY (9/4) looks a touch short in the market, given that she has yet to prove herself over this trip. She has shaped as though 2m4½f could suit, but there are stronger stayers in the field, and the slow pace may not help her if she finds herself needing a stiffer test.

Overall, LARGY FORCE is the most likely winner, given the race shape and her progressive chase form, but OAKLEY DANCER is an interesting under-the-radar contender if finding improvement over fences.
