3:25 Newcastle – Strong Contender & Market Oversight

·

The Virgin Bet Daily Price Boosts Handicap Hurdle (Class 4, 2m4½f, Soft) presents a competitive field of 11 runners, and while the market has latched onto the more obvious contenders, one or two could be underestimated in the betting.

Strongest Contender – AIRE SPRAY (9/2)

Aire Spray has made notable progress in recent outings and arrives here seeking a third straight win. His latest success at Wetherby over 2m4f on heavy ground was a performance of real merit, where he travelled strongly before finding plenty under pressure to score by 1¾ lengths. The way he finished that day suggests the extra distance here will suit rather than hinder.

His previous win at Carlisle (2m3f, soft) also showcased a good attitude, and with soft ground again in play, conditions should be in his favour. He’s well-handicapped on the revised mark of 101, and crucially, the prominent racing style should be an asset given this contest lacks an abundance of early pace.

Market Underestimation – GALAHAD THREEPWOOD (5/1) & AQUITAINE BOY (6/1)

Galahad Threepwood has been quietly progressive and ran a fair race last time out at Newcastle, finishing third behind two well-handicapped rivals. His ability to stay on late suggests the step back up in trip could unlock further improvement. Given the weak pace setup, his tactical versatility could be key if he sits closer to the leaders than last time.

Aquitaine Boy, meanwhile, is a horse with untapped potential in handicaps. He won here last month over 2m4f, just getting up late, and while his finishing position last time at Catterick (8th) looks underwhelming, he was never put in the race and still stayed on respectably. His record under Brian Hughes is solid, and with a bit more luck in running, he could outperform his odds once again.

Verdict

📌 AIRE SPRAY (9/2) rates the likeliest winner with his progressive profile, strong finishing ability, and suitability to conditions. He’s expected to be prominent and should prove tough to pass.

📌 GALAHAD THREEPWOOD (5/1) & AQUITAINE BOY (6/1) appear underestimated by the market, with both looking well-suited to the trip and conditions. If either is ridden closer to the pace, they could prove serious dangers late on.

With 11 runners, each-way options are viable, and Galahad Threepwood & Aquitaine Boy both make appeal in that regard.
