The SIS Supporting Irish Racing Novice Handicap Chase at Clonmel (2m½f, soft) looks like a competitive affair, but one runner stands out as the most progressive and well-handicapped horse in the race.
JAY PEE M (9/2) is the obvious starting point. A maiden hurdle placer, he improved significantly for his switch to fences, making an immediate impact when winning a 15-runner maiden chase at Cork last month. That race suggested there’s plenty more to come, as he jumped well and found extra when challenged late on. The form has substance, with the runner-up Glady Max running creditably since.
What makes Jay Pee M particularly appealing here is that he now moves into handicaps off a mark of 108, which looks very fair considering his potential for improvement. Clonmel’s soft ground should be no issue given his stamina profile, and a 5lb claimer retains the ride, meaning he effectively races off a featherweight. The stable is in good form, and given his race position—likely settling midfield before being produced late—this right-handed track should suit perfectly. He looks a worthy favourite and should go very close.
One the Market May Be Missing
With the market focused on Jay Pee M, Zurich, and Mount Ferns, there’s an unexposed chaser lurking at a bigger price who could outrun expectations.
JOUSTER (7/1) has been progressing steadily, winning a maiden chase at Tramore before backing that up with a handicap hurdle win at Fairyhouse. His latest run—a disappointing effort in a competitive Leopardstown handicap—was over an unsuitable 2m4½f trip on good-to-soft ground. Back down in trip here and with conditions in his favour, he could easily bounce back.
Gavin Cromwell’s runners are always worth noting in these types of races, and Jouster’s ability to travel strongly in his races should serve him well. The switch back to a softer surface, combined with Keith Donoghue booked for the ride, suggests a big run is likely at a price. He looks underestimated.
Conclusion
This looks like a race that should set up nicely for Jay Pee M, who is the strongest bet given his profile and the likelihood of further improvement. However, Jouster could be overpriced given his previous form and conditions in his favour. Both are worth keeping onside in the market.
