This year’s Kingwell Hurdle features a small but select field, with market leader Burdett Road a short-priced favourite following his strong efforts in top company. However, there’s every reason to believe one runner is being underestimated by the market, and they may be the value play.
Strongest Contender – GOLDEN ACE (9/4)
Golden Ace has all the hallmarks of a top-class performer and looks the one to beat here. She was unbeaten in novice company last season, including an authoritative win in the Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. On her latest start in the Relkeel Hurdle over 2½ miles, she travelled powerfully and looked a major threat before the longer trip and stronger stayers found her out late. Dropping back to this sharper 2-mile trip, where her turn of foot is most potent, is a significant plus.
The likely strong pace set by Burdett Road will play into her hands, as she thrives when coming off a fast gallop. With a patient ride from Lorcan Williams, her finishing burst could prove decisive. Crucially, she has already shown her ability to handle soft ground, so conditions pose no concern.
Market Overlook – BRENTFORD HOPE (15/2)
The market may be underestimating Brentford Hope, who shaped much better than the bare result when second to Constitution Hill in the International Hurdle at Cheltenham. While he was flattered by his proximity to the winner, he stayed on well from off the pace and showed that he belongs in this company.
A dual handicap winner last season, his form on soft ground is solid, and he has the tactical speed to be competitive in a small field. With the leaders likely to ensure a genuine tempo, he could be the one to capitalise if Burdett Road and Golden Ace engage in battle too soon.
Verdict
Golden Ace stands out as the most likely winner, especially with the return to 2 miles suiting her so well. She has proven class, strong course form, and is likely to be finishing fastest under a patient ride.
However, Brentford Hope offers a tempting alternative for those looking for a value angle, particularly if the front pair soften each other up.
The favourite Burdett Road commands respect on class but looks short enough at current odds, given the strength of his rivals and his vulnerability if taken on for the lead.
