2:25 Ascot – Betfair Exchange Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) – 15th February 2025

·

A competitive renewal of this Class 2 Ascot handicap, and the market has taken a clear view on Altobelli (4/1), who was impressive when landing the Holloway’s Handicap over course and distance last time. He responded well to pressure, has proven form on heavy ground, and remains on a fair mark. With a strong pace likely, he should be in the mix again, but there is a value angle elsewhere.

The one the market may be underestimating is Joyeux Machin (5/1), who shaped very well at Wetherby when a close third in a deep handicap. That effort caught the eye, as he was given a considerate ride and finished powerfully without being fully extended. He has top-tier form in both hurdles and fences, relishes testing ground, and represents the potent Skelton team. With a more prominent ride likely here, he can showcase his strong finishing kick, and his current price offers value against the favourite.

The layers may be overlooking Into The Park (16/1), who has quietly been building to a big run. He returned to form at Exeter when second to a well-handicapped rival, despite conceding race fitness. He acts on soft ground, should relish this trip, and will be suited by a strong pace. His price looks generous for a horse who is clearly improving and can be competitive off his mark.

The reliable Patriotik (6/1) also warrants mention. His second at Aintree in a strong handicap showcased his staying power, and he will be doing his best work late if the front-runners overdo it. However, his price is tighter relative to his chance, so the better value lies with Joyeux Machin and Into The Park.

Verdict:

Strongest Contender: Joyeux Machin (5/1) – Strong recent form, value angle against the favourite.

Market Value Play: Into The Park (16/1) – Progressive profile, overpriced relative to chance.

A fascinating contest, with Joyeux Machin offering a blend of class and value to topple the favourite, while Into The Park provides the angle for those seeking a bigger price.
