Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase – 1:50 Ascot (15th February 2025)

·

The Reynoldstown often provides key pointers for the Festival, and this year’s renewal looks highly competitive despite the small field. The market centres on JINGKO BLUE and LOWRY’S BAR, and rightly so, but there could be more between them than the current odds suggest.

Strongest Contender – LOWRY’S BAR (2/1)
Jingko Blue is a worthy favourite, unbeaten over fences, but the key to this race could lie in the Windsor form line. LOWRY’S BAR was beaten 2¼ lengths that day but was every bit the equal of the winner until a heavy mistake three out halted his momentum. His front-running style is a huge asset here, especially on a course like Ascot, where dictating from the front can be advantageous. With a clear round, he has every chance of reversing that form. The ground holds no fears—he relishes testing conditions, having won convincingly on heavy at Chepstow. With the market making Jingko Blue the clear favourite, the value lies firmly with LOWRY’S BAR.

Market Overlooked – THE CHANGING MAN (9/2)
While the top two dominate the betting, THE CHANGING MAN offers some interest at around 9/2. He has been running with great credit in competitive handicaps, most notably finishing runner-up in the Great Yorkshire Chase at Doncaster. His proven stamina and ability to handle testing ground are notable assets. A tactical race where the leaders overdo it could bring his staying power into play late on. While he may lack the class of the front pair on paper, the market underestimates his ability to capitalise on any slip-ups.

Verdict:

Win Bet: LOWRY’S BAR (2/1) – Outstanding value to reverse recent form.

Second Best: JINGKO BLUE – Clear talent but short in the market.

Potential Sleeper: THE CHANGING MAN – Underestimated staying credentials.

If the market holds, LOWRY’S BAR represents a genuine chance of value against the favourite, while THE CHANGING MAN is the one to consider for those looking beyond the obvious.
