The 2:05 at Haydock Park is a competitive Veterans’ Handicap Chase over 2m 3f 203y, featuring a field of six experienced chasers. On ground that is expected to be good to soft, pace dynamics and race fitness will be crucial.
Nocte Volatus stands out as the strongest contender. His consistency this season is hard to ignore, with two wins followed by two runner-up finishes, including a solid second to The Flier Begley at Market Rasen last time out. He races prominently, which is often an advantage at Haydock, and his proven stamina over similar distances adds further confidence. With a tongue strap applied since his breathing operation, he remains competitive off a mark of 130 and should go close.
The Flier Begley is another who merits respect, having beaten Nocte Volatus decisively in their last encounter. He stays further than this trip, and while he may find a sharper test slightly less favourable, his recent form is impressive. However, at the current prices, there may be better value elsewhere.
Whistleinthedark is an intriguing value proposition. His most recent run at Warwick marked a return to form when ridden more positively, finishing second to the useful Le Milos. Conditions and distance suit him well, and if similarly positive tactics are employed, he could capitalise on any weaknesses in the leading contenders.
Eaton Collina and The Edgar Wallace both have ability, but their most recent runs suggest they need to find more in this company. Dubai Days, returning from a long layoff, may find this too sharp without a recent run.
Nocte Volatus looks the most reliable proposition given his consistency and suitability to conditions, while Whistleinthedark offers potential value if able to build on his latest effort.
