Punchestown 3:55 – Kilkea Castle Hotel & Golf Resort Maiden Hurdle

·

The 3:55 at Punchestown is a competitive (at the top end of the market) 21-runner maiden hurdle over 2m3f on yielding to soft ground. With a big field and a mix of experienced and unexposed runners, the race presents both a strong favourite and some interesting each-way angles.

Market Leaders

Dr Eggman (13/8) – The Favourite

Willie Mullins’ Dr Eggman is a clear favourite, and for good reason. He has the best form in the race, having placed in several maiden hurdles, and will be ridden by Paul Townend. However, there are some concerns:

  • He has been beaten four times when trading odds-on in-running.
  • While consistent, he has failed to get his head in front despite strong support.
  • At 13/8, he offers little value unless everything falls into place.

Last Kingdom (7/2) – The Alternative Mullins Runner

Mullins’ second-string, Last Kingdom, is interesting at 7/2. He’s a 4-year-old receiving weight from older rivals, and his connections have a strong record in these types of races. While he needs to improve, he could be the main danger to Dr Eggman, and the market suggests he has a solid chance.

Youlita (4/1) – The Each-Way Play

Charles Byrnes is a trainer known for landing gambles, and Youlita at 4/1 is a horse to watch closely. He showed promise in bumpers and is unexposed over hurdles. Any late market support would be significant—Byrnes rarely runs horses at short prices unless they’re ready to win.

Other Contenders to Note

  • Slieve Annilog (7/1) – Has solid maiden form and could sneak into the places.
  • Cardcounter (15/2) – Gordon Elliott’s runner who fell on his debut but has potential.
  • Champagne Kid (15/2) – A former bumper winner who could improve.

Betting Strategy

Lay Dr Eggman (13/8) if he shortens further (6/4 or lower). He has the best form but is vulnerable. ✅ Back Youlita (4/1) Each-Way. Byrnes horses at this price are always worth watching. ✅ Consider Last Kingdom (7/2) for a win bet. If Dr Eggman underperforms, he could take advantage. ✅ Each-Way on Cardcounter (15/2). Elliott’s horse is unexposed and could improve.

Final Thoughts

This is a wide-open maiden hurdle, and while Dr Eggman is the most solid option on form, he isn’t great value at 13/8. The market suggests Youlita and Last Kingdom are real threats, and Cardcounter looks interesting at a bigger price. Watching the late betting moves will be key.
