A small but competitive field lines up for this five-furlong Class 3 handicap at Southwell, with seven runners set to face the starter. The pace setup looks fairly even on paper, though Southwell’s straight five often rewards those who race prominently, especially when the early gallop isn’t overly strong. That should put the front-runners in the driving seat here.

Hiya Maite appeals as the most likely winner. He’s a dual course-and-distance winner who had been shaping well before finding listed company too hot to handle here last time out. Back in handicap company, with a tongue tie refitted, and drawn ideally to get on the speed, he should have every chance of bossing this from the front. There’s always the concern that he trades short in-running only to get caught late, but the setup is in his favour today.

True Promise is the main threat. The youngest in the field, this four-year-old has been progressive and ran with credit when second at Chelmsford last time. He’s well drawn in stall 1 to sit just behind the pace and could be the one to take advantage if Hiya Maite comes back to them late on. He’s a solid each-way type when there are more runners, but here, with just the seven, he’s the main danger to the favourite.

Bedford Flyer and Existent are both capable on their day but come with question marks. Bedford Flyer was disappointing here last time, while Existent has become expensive to follow, regularly hitting the frame without getting his head in front. In a race likely to favour those on or near the pace, Existent’s usual hold-up tactics may leave him with too much to do.

Of the rest, Miss Attitude makes her return after a lengthy layoff and may need the run, while Moon Flight and Glorious Angel look up against it on recent form.

Verdict

This looks a good opportunity for Hiya Maite to capitalise on a drop in class and make the most of a prominent ride. True Promise is feared most, with Bedford Flyer and Existent best of the rest.
