5.00 Catterick – Hunters’ Chase Preview

·

Just five runners line up for this Class 5 hunter chase over 3m1f at Catterick. The pace is expected to be weak, which could favour those able to travel comfortably and finish strongly.

The Main Two

This looks a match on paper between Presentandcounting and Evas Oskar.

Presentandcounting is the early favourite. He’s been reliable in small fields before, including a comfortable win over course and distance in November. However, he was poor on his last start at Fakenham, weakening out of contention despite going off favourite. He’s been known to trade short in-running and not see things out, which is a concern here, especially if this turns into a test late on.

Evas Oskar comes into this off the back of a win at Bangor, leaving his comeback run well behind. He has good staying form, including a Cheltenham handicap win in the past. He looks the stronger option in terms of recent performance, profile, and suitability if this turns into a stamina contest.

The Rest

Captain Tommy was in good form this time last year but has been pulled up on his last two runs, including his return in points. He’s capable on his day but has plenty to prove right now.

Didero Vallis showed a bit of spark when third at Taunton recently. He’s been on a long losing run and is unreliable, but small fields can throw up surprises.

She Is The Enemy is making up the numbers.

Market Check

On Betfair, Presentandcounting trades around 2.1, with Evas Oskar at 2.6. The favourite has been edging out slightly during the day, while Evas Oskar has held steady. That suggests there’s a bit more confidence behind Evas Oskar.

Verdict

It’s a weak race. There’s no need to overcomplicate it.

  • Evas Oskar is the pick. He arrives in form, stays well, and looks solid at around 13/8.
  • Presentandcounting has the ability but needs to prove he can finish his race properly.
  • If you want a speculative play, Captain Tommy might hit the frame at bigger odds, but his recent form is a red flag.

Nothing fancy here. Just a small field, a simple choice, and a straightforward bet.

Selection:
Evas Oskar win bet at 13/8
