This is an early assessment of the 4.50 at Wincanton, a Class 4 handicap hurdle over 3 miles 150 yards, with 10 runners declared. The going is currently reported as Good to Soft (Soft in places).

This is a value-based approach where we create our own set of “fair odds” using HRB TimeWise ratings and ranks, combined with a percentage scale based on field size. The goal is simple: compare our numbers to the best prices available the evening before the race and spot any value.

- We assign percentage chances to each horse based on their ranking, using a predefined scale for a 10-runner field.
- We convert those percentages into fair odds.
- We compare our fair odds to the live market.
This gives us a clear, data-driven way to find runners that are overpriced or underpriced.

Initial Thoughts
At the current prices, the only real value sits with Whydah Gally (14/1) and Toonagh Warrior (17/2). Both are priced bigger than we’d expect based on our tissue and offer an angle in what looks a fairly average race for the grade.
The market is very keen on Drash On Ruby, but at 10/3 she is too short relative to our fair odds of 6/1. Yes, she’s been consistent, and the race setup might suit her, but we can’t justify backing her at that price.
It’s also worth noting the overreaction in the market to Saunton Surf, who is just 17/2 despite recent form that doesn’t support a single-figure price. We had her down closer to 33/1.
