Kempton 4.22 – Restricted Maiden Stakes (1m4f)

·

A field of 12 goes to post for this Class 5 maiden at Kempton, where most of these are lightly raced or making their debuts. It’s a weak-looking race on paper, with a lack of depth and only a couple of runners showing any real form so far.

Race Overview

The market is understandably headed by One Horse Town, who has placed on all five of his starts and put up a solid effort when third in a handicap here last week. This step back into maiden company looks an obvious opportunity, and he sets the standard on what we’ve seen. However, the price has shortened up significantly, and at around 2.7, there’s little appeal from a value perspective.

His main rival in the betting is Nobleman, trained by Andrew Balding, who was second in a small field last time and is open to improvement, particularly stepping up to this trip. The stable remains in strong form, but again, the market hasn’t missed him, trading around 3.0.

Value Angles

The most interesting alternative at the prices is La Trinite. She shaped well on debut here over 11 furlongs when finishing third, despite meeting some trouble in running. With natural progression and a step up in trip, she’s entitled to get closer today. She’s available at 9.0 or bigger, which looks fair given her profile.

For those looking at something at a bigger price, newcomer Rommie The Miracle is worth a mention. By Cracksman, out of an Italian 1000 Guineas winner, she has a staying pedigree and represents a yard capable of readying one first time out. She has drifted to 16.0+, and while there’s guesswork involved, she might outrun those odds in a race lacking depth.

Summary

  • Strongest contender: One Horse Town – clear form pick but too short.
  • Best value: La Trinite – open to improvement and overpriced.
  • Wildcard: Rommie The Miracle – unexposed and interesting on breeding.

This is a race where the favourite could easily win, but the market has squeezed all the juice out of his price. In contrast, La Trinite appeals as a fair bet to hit the frame or better.
