The feature race at Lingfield on Wednesday is the BetMGM Spring Cup Stakes, a Listed contest over 7 furlongs for three-year-olds. With just seven runners, it’s a small but competitive field, and the market is headed by three improving types who all have something to recommend them.
Race Setup
The pace is expected to be even, which should suit those racing near the front. Bountiful is likely to be well placed, while Rebel’s Gamble – who tends to be held up – may need things to fall right if the leaders control the race steadily.
There’s no major draw bias over this trip at Lingfield, so it should come down to ability, positioning, and who is most forward on the day.
Contenders
Bountiful (15/8)
Trained by George Boughey and ridden by Billy Loughnane, Bountiful sets the standard on form. She finished a close fourth in the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket in July and returns from a break here. If she’s ready to roll after 236 days off, she holds strong claims. The pace setup is also in her favour, and she has shown the ability to travel well and trade short in running.
Rajeko (5/2)
Rajeko comes into this after finishing second in a valuable Group 2 event in Qatar just 17 days ago. He’s fit, proven at 7f, and his form looks solid in the context of this race. If he can build on his overseas effort, he looks the main danger to Bountiful.
Rebel’s Gamble (100/30)
The Timeform pick, Rebel’s Gamble has improved quickly, winning two novice events before finishing second in a Southwell handicap last time. This is a step up in class, and he tries 7f for the first time, which poses a small question. He also tends to be held up, which might not be ideal if Bountiful and Rajeko get first run.
The Rest
- Dance In The Storm is lightly raced and open to improvement but needs a big step forward.
- Cabelleroso returns from a break with a hood on and needs to bridge a gap in class.
- Raneenn runs for William Haggas and has won twice over 6f but was well beaten in Listed company last time.
- Enola Holmes looks up against it on ratings and class.
Verdict
On balance, Bountiful looks the most likely winner if ready after her layoff. Her Group 2 fourth sets a clear standard, and the race shape should suit her prominent style. However, with fitness assured and solid recent form, Rajeko offers a touch more value at the prices and makes plenty of appeal.
Recommended Bet:
- Rajeko (5/2+) to win
- Optional saver on Bountiful if she drifts to 9/4 or bigger
Watching Brief: Rebel’s Gamble may continue to improve, but at the current prices, there’s little value compared to the top two.
