The final race on Lingfield’s Wednesday card is a competitive Class 6 handicap over 1m2f for three-year-olds, with eight runners going to post. The market is tightly bunched at the head, and while the quality is modest, it’s an interesting little contest with recent form tying several of these together.
Race Setup
The pace forecast suggests a weak gallop, which often makes positioning crucial around Lingfield. Horses racing prominently are likely to have the advantage, and that’s worth factoring into any selections.
Key Runners
Backer Bilk (9/4)
A solid and reliable performer who won over course and distance in February and was only narrowly denied at Wolverhampton last time by today’s rival Sonic Pioneer. Billy Loughnane is a strong booking, and the horse has clear claims on form. The slight concern is that he tends to be held up, and with no guaranteed pace on, this may not set up perfectly for him.
Sonic Pioneer (9/4)
Improved sharply when making all at Wolverhampton just nine days ago, holding off Backer Bilk by a length. He carries a 6lb penalty for that win and steps up slightly in trip here. He’s still lightly raced and may well have more to come, especially if able to dominate again.
All Cost (10/3)
Returned from a short break with an encouraging second at Kempton last time, only beaten a short head. He’s less exposed than many and could easily build on that. The market support that day was strong, and he looks set to go close again.
Flaine (12/1)
Possibly the value angle in the race. She’s been running with credit in similar company and will appreciate a steady pace, having been competitive over further recently. David Loughnane is in good form, and this filly has place claims if things fall right.
Verdict
It’s hard to knock Backer Bilk, who brings consistency and strong recent form, but the lack of pace is a small concern. Sonic Pioneer has to prove he can back up his improved effort, and the extra weight might just peg him back. All Cost has potential but is short enough in the betting.
At the prices, Flaine is worth a small each-way interest at around 12/1. She should be suited by the likely race setup, and her trainer’s good form adds to the appeal.
For win purposes, Backer Bilk edges it as the most solid option, but it’s not a race to get heavily involved in.
Suggested Bets
- Backer Bilk – Win (9/4)
- Flaine – Each-Way (12/1)
