🏇 2.00 Cheltenham – County Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap)

·

Distance: 2m179y | Going: Good to Soft | Runners: 16 | Pace Forecast: Strong

Preview:

The County Hurdle is one of the trickiest handicaps of the week — usually run at an end-to-end gallop, it favours hold-up horses with a sharp turn of foot and form at Graded or Graded-pace level, not just Class 2 grinders. In recent years, it’s also become a plotters’ paradise, with Irish trainers excelling in keeping horses under wraps for a big day release.

🔥 Strongest Contender – KARGESE (3/1)

On pure form and ratings, Kargese comes into this looking thrown in off OR 145, given her Juvenile G1-second and strong Grade 2 efforts last season. She’s tactically versatile, and with Paul Townend booked for Willie Mullins, it’s hard not to see her running a huge race.

A standout Timeform rating, smart pedigree (by Jeu St Eloi out of a Shaanmer mare), she ticks nearly every box. She’s near top of the TFR+LBS adjusted figures (161) and the Tissue v3 model prices her at around 7/2, so 3/1 is only just fair — not a value price, but a solid win bet for multis.

⚠️ Main Danger – LARK IN THE MORNIN (9/2)

Another second-season hurdler with Group-level Flat ability, Lark In The Mornin has been building nicely for Joseph O’Brien. He’s a smooth traveller who’ll benefit massively from a fast-run race, and his mark of 142 looks lenient on his best form. He stays strongly, but has shown pace in deeper races, and JJ Slevin is an ideal pilot for a patient hold-up ride in this sort of contest.

He ranks just behind Kargese on the adjusted TFR+LBS scale (158) but scores well on Tissue v3 anomaly detection (bookie price looks generous). This one is a serious win threat at a better price than the fav.

💰 Best Each-Way Value – ETHICAL DIAMOND (14/1)

A typical Mullins Festival handicap dark horse, Ethical Diamond has been laid out for something, and while this is competitive, he’s got a sneaky profile: unexposed after a quiet season, useful Flat form under the radar, and Patrick Mullins taking the ride adds intrigue.

Off a mark of 136, he’s weighted to strike if stepping forward — and he ranks 4th on TFR+LBS with scope to outperform his rating. The Tissue v3 model has him at around 10/1, so 14/1 is a good edge, particularly if enhanced EW terms are available. A big-runner handicap improver in typical Mullins style.
