The Contrarian’s Preview

This isn’t a race for the faint-hearted — a muddling gallop, form squiggles everywhere, and a betting market laser-focused on all the wrong horses. That’s just how we like it.

The market clings to Flemensface (9/2) and Nelson County (11/2), convinced they’re plot jobs ready to explode upped in trip. Maybe. But let’s be honest — both still have to prove they stay three miles, and this race rarely rewards the obvious. Flemensface was beaten fair and square last time by a horse who wandered home, while Nelson County was flattered running on past tired legs in a burnout race. Neither should be this short.

Machismo (11/2) has the best numbers — granted — and a trainer with a reputation to respect. But he’s been off the bridle a long way out too often for a horse supposedly crying out for a trip. A soft finisher in a slowly-run race? That’s a recipe for disappointment.

If you want substance over speculation, look deeper.

👀 SIR BOB (12/1) is the forgotten horse. He’s a course winner, a proper stayer, and has Walsh booked — a tip in itself from this stable. He’s quietly run into form this season and looks tailor-made for a race that’ll be about stamina and track craft, not turn of foot.

💣 TOOR KHOV (12/1) is the sort of horse the market hates: a drifter after one below-par run, but ignore his Leopardstown blowout — he’s back in calmer waters and will relish a tactical crawl followed by a slog. His Navan second screams hidden form and this setup plays to his strengths.

🎯 ARION SOLDIER (16/1) could surprise too. Last seen flopping over fences, but he bolted up here over hurdles last spring, and his profile suggests he’s better fresh than the market realises. If his jumping holds up, he’s overpriced on past figures.

🚫 GETAWAY CHARLIE, Lady Bluebird, and Betty Dutton look booked for rear-guard action — overfaced, under-motivated, or simply out of their depth.

This race won’t be won by who the market loves — it’ll be won by who keeps going when others stop, and there’s value in backing those who’ve done it before, not just those the odds compilers hope will.

Contrarian Verdict:

1️⃣ SIR BOB (12/1) – bombproof, honest stayer with winning form here
2️⃣ TOOR KHOV (12/1) – undervalued, course-suited grinder
3️⃣ ARION SOLDIER (16/1) – unexposed, bounce-back angle

Some bookies paying 4 places with BOG.
