Value Spotlight – 21 March 2025 Racing: Two Repeat Winners Under the Radar

·

A pair of familiar names line up on Friday, bidding to repeat victories in races they won 12 months ago – and the market might just be underestimating both.

Using my structured private handicap method, I’ve analysed both contests in depth, adjusting for weight, going, trip, pace shape, trainer/jockey influences and course suitability. Here’s where the value lies:

15:30 Newbury – Ultimate Travel Company Handicap Hurdle (3m, Class 3)

ZAIN NIGHTS returns to defend his crown, and while his recent form figures may deter some, he’s better than they suggest. He rates third best on adjusted figures in my model – just a few pounds off the favourite – and crucially, he’s proven under these race conditions.

My tissue odds rate him around 11/4 – 3/1, yet he’s currently 5/1 with bookmakers. That’s a significant edge and a classic example of a horse priced on recency bias rather than true chance. He’s a value each-way play, especially if settling closer in a likely slow-run race.

Bonus value note: JUBILANT (10/1) is another to note – lightly raced, unexposed over staying trips, and shaped better than bare result last time.

17:00 Musselburgh – Go North Sea Pigeon Series Final (2m1f, Class 2)

MACK THE MAN caused a minor surprise in this race last year and lines up again off a similar mark. He’s not been in peak form this winter, but hinted at a return to life last time out and could easily be primed to peak here again.

He ranks mid-field in my adjusted ratings but only a few pounds off the leading trio. Given course form, trainer intent and pace dynamics (strong gallop should help him settle and come late), I’ve rated him a 6/1 shot. The market offers 14/1, making him a standout each-way value bet in a race with plenty of exposed types.

Final Summary – Recommended Value Bets:

ZAIN NIGHTS – Newbury 15:30 – EW @ 5/1+

MACK THE MAN – Musselburgh 17:00 – EW @ 14/1+

(Optional saver: JUBILANT – Newbury 15:30 – EW @ 10/1+)

Both horses offer more than nostalgic appeal – they’re genuine contenders being mispriced by the market. The edge lies in trusting the underlying ratings, not the recent formline noise.
