🏇 Race Preview – 16:40 Southwell (5f, Class 6 Handicap) – Speed Perspective

·

This Class 6 sprint over the flying 5f at Southwell is shaping up to be a strongly run affair, with a handful of habitual front-runners ensuring a relentless gallop. On the All-Weather here, raw speed and course familiarity are often decisive, and several runners bring strong figures to the table.

🔝 Popular Dream sets the standard on recent figures, bouncing back to a career-best speed rating of 84 last time out – the highest last-run figure in the field by some margin. His track average (77.05) and trip peak (84.32) are both top drawer, and with the benefit of proven speed at Southwell under his belt, he rates as the horse they all have to beat if repeating that recent run.

🔥 Nelson Gay brings high-class historical form to the table with the highest maximum speed figure in the field (88.52) and consistent recent efforts in the 68–70 range. His average at 5f is excellent (70.72), although his Southwell-specific record isn’t quite as strong, which may just blunt his edge in this specialist test. Nevertheless, his sheer class makes him a major player if able to sit handy and pounce late.

🏟️ Jeans Maite is a Southwell track-and-trip specialist, boasting one of the strongest combinations of average and maximum figures over both course and distance. She rarely runs a bad race here and looks set to be suited by a fast pace, allowing her to come late off a solid tempo. Though her recent figures are slightly below the top two, she’s one of the most reliable profile horses in the field.
