A wide-open low-grade handicap where many are trying to bounce back, but a few bring compelling recent evidence and track suitability to the table. Pace is forecast even, though historically front-runners or prominent racers have the edge here, especially around Downpatrick’s undulating, turning track.

Strongest Contender: COCO LIGHTNING (TFR 107, 17/2)
Shaped like a major improver when third in a strong-run Fairyhouse handicap on yard debut, and while he flopped next time at Catterick (odds-on, softish ground), that run came just 15 days later and may have come too soon. Now returns after a short break with ideal conditions: prominent running style, trip stamina proven, and trainer Cian Collins’ runners go well here. Expected to be ridden forward and looks primed to strike if bouncing back.

Main Dangers:
CHER TARA (TFR 108, 11/4f)
Last-time-out winner at Down Royal and now goes up in trip. Has shaped like she’ll stay further, and being a Gordon Elliott-trained mare under a good 5lb claimer (Danny Gilligan), she’s likely to be popular again. However, a mid-division run style might put her at a slight tactical disadvantage here unless they go harder than forecast.
DOYEN FLYER (TFR 106, 8/1)
Lightly raced over hurdles and hinted at ability on his penultimate run at Punchestown. The recent chase run at Wexford reads okay in hindsight, and he’s now returned to hurdles over a more suitable trip. May benefit if stamina comes into play late.
ILBDARE (TFR 106, 7/1)
Best form gives him a big shout. Has placed over similar trips and ground, though his hold-up style doesn’t look ideal on this track. Still, if things get messy up front, he’ll be one doing best late.
KALSMAN (TFR 105, 14/1)
Won over course and distance last summer in an amateurs’ race. Big layoff (288 days) is a concern, but he clearly likes Downpatrick and comes from a shrewd yard. Market vibes worth watching.

Other Notes:
SESKIN FLASH was all the rage last time and shaped better than the result after a costly blunder late on. But he’s short in the betting again, and his form lacks substance over this trip.
JIMLI’S CAVE is another with a C&D win, though his last run ended in a pull-up, and he’s not the most consistent.
KILKEE ROYAL and PECKHAM SPRINGS are point-to-point types who need a revival, while FIRE FORCE and ARE WE DANCING look very hard to recommend.
—
Verdict:
COCO LIGHTNING looks to hold the strongest claims if forgiven his last run. With a favourable pace setup and solid debut for current connections, he makes plenty of appeal at the prices. CHER TARA is a danger, especially if she stays, while DOYEN FLYER and ILBDARE are capable of running into the frame if things fall right.
