18:45 Limerick – Limerick Races On Facebook Handicap Chase (2m1f165y, €14,500, 5yo+, 1 April 2025) on good ground (good to yielding in places),

·

This looks a fascinating contest despite just six runners, with several unexposed chasers and pace variables potentially swinging things late on. The strong predicted pace could bring the closers into it, especially those who stay a bit further.

🔝 Strongest Contender: DRUMGILL (IRE)

Adjusted Rating: 132 | Layoff: 17 days | Group: Top-rated (Danger)
DRUMGILL sets the standard here on adjusted ratings and Timeform performance figures. He’s coming off a solid third in a Grade 3 novice chase at Thurles, where he kept on well after a 12-week break. That run was a career-best over fences, and this represents a marked drop in class.

🗨 Timeform Comment: “DRUMGILL acquitted himself well in a Grade 3 novice… might be able to outclass this opposition with his sights lowered.”

He’s tactically versatile and likely to benefit from the strong gallop. Stays further and races prominently or just behind the pace, which looks ideal here.

⚠️ Main Dangers

🥈 DON’T TALK (GER)

Adjusted Rating: 129 | Layoff: 66 days | Group: Danger
Arrives on a hat-trick after back-to-back wins at Down Royal and Fairyhouse. While those wins came over slightly longer trips and in lesser company, he’s clearly thriving. The layoff is 66 days, so he’ll need to prove he’s sharp – but his finishing effort at Fairyhouse (looming up before asserting) was authoritative.

🗨 Timeform Insight: “Loomed up entering straight… stays 21f, effective at shorter.”

He’s 3lb below Drumgill but improving, and the strong pace should suit his patient style.

🥉 MOUNT FRISCO (IRE)

Adjusted Rating: 131 | Layoff: 10 days | Group: Danger
Could go well if bouncing back from a pulled-up effort at Navan, which came after a six-month absence. He’s best when forcing the pace or racing up there early – but that looks a big negative here given the strong pace and multiple front-runners.

He’s within 1lb of top-rated on raw figures but could burn out if he’s involved in a duel, particularly with the likes of Willywampus or Itsalonglongroad up front.

❗ Other Notes

  • GENERAL CLERMONT (128) is also within 4lb of top-rated but returns from a 151-day layoff. He stays further and acts on this ground, but Timeform notes he’s “not the most straightforward,” having previously run out. Risky despite his ability.

🗨 “Doing little wrong of late,” says Timeform – but he’s likely to need the run.

  • ITSALONGLONGROAD (121) is well off the top-rateds and could get swallowed late after chasing the pace. Returns after 96 days off and looks up against it on figures.
  • WILLYWAMPUS is out of form, 56lb inferior on adjusted ratings, and shaped poorly at Gowran after a break. Looks a no hoper unless the race completely falls apart.

🧠 Summary & Verdict

This race has a clear top-rated in DRUMGILL, who drops in class after a Grade 3 effort and has the ideal profile to track a strong pace and pounce late.

🔵 Top Selection: DRUMGILL
🔴 Main Dangers: DON’T TALK, MOUNT FRISCO
🟡 Secondary Threat (if race falls apart late): GENERAL CLERMONT (fitness question)
