Strongest Contender: GREY DAWNING (TFR 177)
Dan Skelton’s rising star was back to his best when outclassing Iroko at Kelso in March. That came after a rare off-day in the King George. He looked much happier front-running and jumping with fluency — a tactic that suits him at this trip.
> Timeform Note: “Back to best… jumping superbly… this has been the target for some time.”
He stays 3¼m, thrives in the spring, and Aintree should play to his strengths. Plenty to like — deserves to head the shortlist.

Main Dangers:
1. SPILLANE’S TOWER (TFR 178)
Lightly raced but hugely classy, this Irish raider was second to Fact To File in the John Durkan and previously a Grade 1 winner at Punchestown. Slightly below par in the King George, but that race didn’t play to his usual patient strengths.
> Timeform Note: “Below form last time, but better expected here with a break and stronger pace scenario.”
He’s a finisher, so the even pace forecast isn’t ideal, but if they go a stride too hard, he’ll be there to pick up the pieces.
2. AHOY SENOR (TFR 176x)
Wild card. He loves Aintree — two wins and two seconds at this Festival — and was going okay before falling in the Gold Cup. Unreliable and prone to errors, but when he’s on-song, few can match him over this trip.
> Timeform Note: “Sketchy jumper and not the most consistent… but strong Aintree record.”
The pace setup suits — prominent racers do well here — so don’t be shocked if he outruns recent form.
3. STAGE STAR (TFR 174)
Looked rejuvenated when second to L’Homme Presse in the Cotswold Chase. Nicholls has won this race multiple times, and stepping up to 3m+ really brought him alive. Ground is ideal and tactics should be positive again.
> Timeform Note: “Shaped as if as good as ever upped markedly in trip.”

Dark Horses & Place Potential:
GAELIC WARRIOR (TFR 170+): Classy, but going right-handed not ideal. Jumping remains a concern, and this isn’t a track that forgives errors.
EMBASSY GARDENS (TFR 170): Smart Tramore winner and not disgraced in the Irish Gold Cup. Could sneak into the frame.
THE REAL WHACKER (TFR 168): Early-season form was good (beat Bravemansgame in the Charlie Hall), but he’s looked off the boil since.
—
Tactics & Pace Setup:
Pace Forecast: Even
Pace Bias: Hold-up horses usually disadvantaged over this trip at Aintree. That’s a big positive for Ahoy Senor and Grey Dawning, who race prominently.

Verdict:
1st – GREY DAWNING (high cruising speed, solid jumper, track ideal)
2nd – SPILLANE’S TOWER (back from a break, dangerous closer)
3rd – AHOY SENOR (loves this track, dangerous if jumping holds up)
Best Outsider – STAGE STAR (each-way shout if reproducing his Cotswold Chase effort)
