🏇 Race Preview: 15:27 Limerick – Locke Burger Novice Handicap Hurdle (2m, Good)

·

A tricky little 7-runner handicap where the pace setup is expected to be very weak—a key tactical factor that brings prominent racers into sharp focus. Horses who can hold position and inject pace from the front will be at a clear advantage on this drying ground.

🔥 Strongest Contender: THE DANCING TREE (IRE)

Trainer: Gavin Cromwell | Jockey: Keith Donoghue
Timeform Rating: 133 | ProHandicap Max Adj: 129+

This lightly-raced Pillar Coral gelding looks to have a strong profile for this. Only edged out in a C&D handicap last time—on heavy going—he showed a nice turn of foot and shaped like a winner in waiting. That was his handicap debut, and the Timeform analysts noted he was “much improved” and only “edged out on the line.” Now returns fresh off a 72-day break, but Cromwell is a shrewd placer and this doesn’t look deep.

Positioned just behind the pace, he’ll likely be ideally placed in a race lacking early dash. His upward curve makes him the standout on both raw ability and tactical shape.

🧠 Timeform Note: “Much improved when just touched off… in excellent hands… appeals as the type to progress further.”

⚠️ Main Dangers

🟨 NOWWHATDOYOUTHINK (IRE)

Trainer: Ray Hackett | Jockey: Liam Quinlan (3)
Timeform Rating: 125 | ProHandicap Max Adj: 125

Returned from a breathing operation to win at Thurles last time, jumping better and showing clear signs of improvement. While that race wasn’t deep, he was well backed (8/1 into 11.87 BSP), and it looked a confidence-building performance. The Hackett yard isn’t flashy, but this one seems on the up.

Importantly, he races handy, and with Quinlan taking 3lb off again, he looks primed to give the fav something to think about.

🧠 Timeform Note: “Much improved… jumping on last… point/bumper winner with tongue tie…”

🟨 MERCURY MISSION

Trainer: P. J. Rothwell | Jockey: Tiernan Power Roche (5)
Timeform Rating: 132 | ProHandicap Max Adj: 122

Scored narrowly at Wexford last time, but that was off a perfect pace setup—he quickened well off a true gallop. He’s a keen-going sort who normally needs a strong pace, and may not settle as easily in this smaller field with slower fractions. Still, he’s a solid performer and has hit the frame multiple times this season, so can’t be ruled out entirely.

🧠 Timeform Note: “Just held on having gone clear after last… has raced freely… usually held up.”

📚 Watch for Trainer Trends

  • No trainer with a runner today has won this exact race in the last two editions, but it’s worth noting Gavin Cromwell (The Dancing Tree) is typically very effective with progressive handicap hurdlers at Limerick—especially when fresh.
  • Rothwell’s runners often go under the radar, and Mercury Mission has responded well to Tiernan Power Roche, who takes 5lb off again.

🧐 Other Notes

  • ITS NOT OVER YET might want further and hasn’t been seen since October. Best watched after the layoff.
  • ANDYOURBIRDCANSING fell last time over fences and may struggle in this company.
  • REDCLIFF GLEN did win here last autumn, but hasn’t fired since. Charles Byrnes’ runners are always respected, but this one needs a revival.
  • KINGDOM CALLING looks out of sorts and is hard to support with confidence despite earlier promise.

✍️ Verdict

THE DANCING TREE sets the standard here and should be hard to beat if he runs to his LTO figure—especially given his front-running style is ideal for a race with no obvious pace pressure.
NOWWHATDOYOUTHINK is the obvious danger, open to more improvement himself, while MERCURY MISSION is solid but tactically disadvantaged.
