🏇 Race Preview: 14:35 Newbury – Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes (Group 3)

·

7f | 3yo Colts | Good ground (Good to Firm in places)

This year’s Greenham serves up a deep and classy renewal. With a strong pace forecast, a favourable low-draw bias, and a few proven stakes horses returning from breaks, this is a proper spring showdown.

🏆 Strongest Contender: RASHABAR

Trainer: Brian Meehan | Jockey: Sean Levey | Adj TFR: 123

Rashabar sets a clear standard on form — the Coventry Stakes winner and twice-Group 1 placed colt (Prix Morny & Lagardère) looks the one to beat if returning in anything like the same form. He’s bred to progress at three, stays the trip, and acts on good to firm. Trainer Brian Meehan has won this race before (2023 with Isaac Shelby), and is also showing a £88 profit to a £1 stake with horses returning from a break — so the 188-day absence doesn’t scare off his backers.

📌 Timeform Comment: “Smart performer… excellent efforts when runner-up in G1s last autumn. Stays 7f. Acts on good to firm and soft.”

⚠️ Main Dangers

CHANCELLOR

Trainer: John & Thady Gosden | Jockey: Robert Havlin | Adj TFR: 111p
A beautifully-bred colt by Kingman out of Breeders’ Cup winner Queen’s Trust. Lightly raced, he dictated and drew clear on his last start at Doncaster in impressive style. He’s off 238 days, but the Gosden yard is red-hot early season and this one looks the type to take a big step forward.

📌 Timeform Comment: “Strong colt… will go on improving.”

JONQUIL

Trainer: Andrew Balding | Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Adj TFR: 105p
Lightly raced Lope de Vega colt who created a strong impression when winning a maiden last season. Green and underwhelming in Listed company next time, but he’s changed stables since and remains a useful prospect. He’s drawn well, has a late kick, and should benefit from the strong pace.

📌 Timeform Comment: “Good-topped colt… remains a useful prospect.”

DIABLO ROJO

Trainer: Raphael Freire | Jockey: David Egan | Adj TFR: 111p
One of the most interesting outsiders. After a breathing operation and fitted with a tongue tie, he returned with a bang — showing real tenacity to win at Lingfield. Still improving and bred to stay 7f. From a €325,000 yearling, connections clearly thought plenty of him.

📌 Timeform Comment: “Much improved when winning latest start… should stay 7f. Capable of better still.”

SARACEN

Trainer: Joseph O’Brien | Jockey: Christophe Soumillon | Adj TFR: 102p
Only two runs so far, but visually very impressive last time when making all at Lingfield. Trainer sends him across from Ireland and books a top international rider in Christophe Soumillon — the same jockey who won this in 2022 (Perfect Power).

📌 Timeform Comment: “Looked a useful prospect… likely to progress further.”

🔍 Trainer Angle Watch

  • Brian Meehan – Won this in 2023 (Isaac Shelby); solid with returning horses.
  • Charlie Appleby – Sends Al Qudra, a front-running type who won a local G2 last time. Yard strikes at 30% over 7f-10f and is historically strong early season.
  • Christophe Soumillon – Rode Perfect Power to win this in 2022; now partners Saracen.

🧠 Key Tactics Insight

  • Strong pace on. Prominent racers may not get an easy time — this could favour midfield sitters with a kick, like Chancellor and Jonquil.
  • Low draw bias at this trip boosts Chancellor (stall 5) and Al Qudra (stall 1).

🧾 Verdict

🔹 RASHABAR is a worthy favourite on Group 1 form and represents a trainer with past success in this race. If fully tuned up, he’ll be hard to beat.
🔹 CHANCELLOR and JONQUIL are the likeliest improvers, both bred for the job and likely to relish conditions.
🔹 DIABLO ROJO and SARACEN offer value for those looking beyond the obvious — both come with upside and could surprise if the market underestimates them.
