Race Preview – 15:12 Newbury, Sat 12 April 2025
OLBG Spring Cup Handicap (Class 2) | 1m | 4yo+ | Turf – Good (G/F in places)
Pace Forecast: Strong
Draw Bias: Against High Numbers
Profile Bias: Prominent racers usually favoured in big-field handicaps over the straight mile.
—
Strongest Contender: URBAN LION (Jack Channon, Edward Greatrex)
TFR: 109
A 4yo on the upgrade for a yard that won this race last year with Metal Merchant. Urban Lion returned with an authoritative win at Chelmsford after a 5-month break, “had plenty left in the tank” according to Timeform, suggesting he’s taken a leap forward over the winter. A prominent racer who should enjoy the strong pace and race conditions, he has a fine draw, excellent pedigree for further improvement, and ticks all the big-field handicap boxes. Strong claims to follow up for the in-form Channon yard.
Timeform Comment: “Had plenty in hand when striking on reappearance… usually races prominently… acts on good to soft and Polytrack.”

Main Dangers
METAL MERCHANT (Jack Channon, David Probert)
TFR: 110
Last year’s winner, returns off a 6lb higher mark but still respected. A strong traveller who’s effective at this trip and track, he’s fresh and goes well off a break. Wasn’t ideally placed when last seen at Goodwood, so the run can be forgiven. Drawn to sit handy again and rates a major threat, especially given Jack Channon’s record in this race.
Timeform Comment: “Strong traveller… not seen to best effect last time… won corresponding event last year.”
—
CLASSIC (Richard Hannon, James Doyle)
TFR: 111 (top-rated)
Career-low mark and gelded since last seen. He looked an unlucky loser when second to Two Tempting at Sandown last summer (met trouble) and retains useful form. Could benefit from a patient Doyle ride if the pace collapses late. Hannon’s team is red-hot and he has won this race before (2022 with Modern News), boosting confidence.
Timeform Comment: “Looked unlucky not to win at Sandown… returns off career-low mark… gelded since.”
—
JAMES MCHENRY (Edward Bethell, William Buick)
TFR: 105
Second in the Cambridgeshire last year behind Liberty Lane, so has Group-class form in the book. Effective over 9f, and likely to be staying on strongly late. Buick booked is a big plus. Might just need the run but remains on a fair mark and handles all ground.
Timeform Comment: “Sturdy gelding… good 2½-length second of 31 in Cambridgeshire… should stay 1¼m.”
—
COGITATE (Charles Hills, Hollie Doyle)
TFR: 106
Lightly raced 4yo with scope. Gelded and ran well on reappearance behind Roi de France, shaping as though better to come. Strong finisher who may need luck from off the pace, but the talent is there. Hills has a solid record with lightly raced types in this race type.
Timeform Comment: “Improved when 1½ lengths fourth… usually races freely… gelded.”

Trainer Watch – Previous Winners
Jack Channon – won this last year (2024) with Metal Merchant; has a strong 1-2 this year again.
Richard Hannon – won in 2022 (Modern News); has strong claims again with Classic.
No repeat runners from other winning yards in recent years (Bethell, Hills, Johnston, and Cox yet to win this).
—
Verdict
Urban Lion is the strongest candidate on form, progression, pace profile and trainer intent. Metal Merchant is a danger to all if replicating his effort from 12 months ago, while Classic is a lurker off a low weight for a stable with previous success. James McHenry and Cogitate complete a shortlist rich in proven form and potential.
