Race Preview – 15:35 Pontefract – RIU Hotels and Resorts Handicap

·

A trappy, tactical Class 2 contest over the round 1m2f at Pontefract, where pace and draw will play a major role. The pace forecast is weak, and with a strong low draw bias, it’s essential to be prominent and ideally drawn inside stalls 1–5.

There’s no standout in terms of class dominance, but the shape of the race heavily favours handy types that can get a forward position early.

Strongest Contender – QITAAL (Charlie Johnston / Joe Fanning)

Drawn well and expected to race prominently in a race lacking natural pace, Qitaal looks made for this setup. He ran a blinder when third at Doncaster in a deeper race than this, doing well despite hanging under pressure. That run was off a six-month break and he typically sharpens up second time out, making this a likely ‘Go Day’ for the Johnston yard.

Timeform comment: “Ran well when third of 16 to City of Delight at Doncaster… usually front runner/races prominently… acts on good to firm and heavy going.”

Trainer Intent: With Joe Fanning back aboard, low draw, and a positive racing style, everything points to this being a primed effort.

Main Dangers

CALUMET (Marco Botti / Marco Ghiani)

Lightly raced 4yo with Group-class relations and shaped with tons of promise last time at Kempton where he was badly hampered in the straight. Has more to offer and could be ahead of his mark if settling handy. Just needs to overcome a slightly wide draw (stall 8) in a pace-sensitive race.

Timeform: “One of the worst sufferers in interference at Kempton… remains unexposed.”

Trainer Intent: Yard in top form. Likely ‘Go Day’ after a quiet seasonal return.

SIEMPRE ARTURO (Daniel & Claire Kubler / Jim Crowley)

Prolific handicapper with 5 wins from 9 in this sphere. He’s stepping into Class 2 company but has excellent stats at the trip (6 runs, 4 wins) and left-handed form reads 6 runs, 3 wins, 4 places. The Kublers are in flying form and Jim Crowley is 2 from 2 on him.

Trainer Intent: Given the break (161 days) and historic success fresh, this could easily be a target race. He’s a hold-up horse in a slow-run contest, which is the only concern.

Watch For: If they ride him handier than usual, it’ll be a tip in itself.

LIGHTENING COMPANY (Ben Haslam / Andrew Mullen)

Won this race in 2023 and looks like he’s been laid out to try and repeat the feat. His Ponte record is strong (5 runs, 1 win, 2 places), and he typically goes well fresh in the spring. He’s not thrown in, but course form and timing make him very dangerous if the gaps come.

Timeform: “Ran well when second at Pontefract in 2024… modest hurdler, ran well last time.”

Trainer Intent: Local yard who have won this race before (2023), and this looks a long-term plot.

Who’s Trying? Who’s Not? (Trainer Intent Insight)

Trying (Go Days):

Qitaal – classic Johnston setup; 2nd run back, drawn low, should lead or sit 2nd.

Calumet – unexposed, unlucky LTO, trainer in form.

Siempre Arturo – Crowley/Kubler combo + race profile screams prep for today.

Lightening Company – returning to scene of best career win; same setup.

Questionable Intent (Handbrake Watch):

Ocean of Dreams – lightly raced but well beaten last time; more likely a sharpening run.

Marhaba The Champ – long layoff, past wind ops, probably being lined up for softer ground or further.

Glistening Nights – big layoff and down in weights, might need the run.

King’s Code – form dipped recently; a surprise if he’s ready to fire here.

TimeWise Summary

Most Likely Winner: QITAAL

Ideal draw, pace map suits, already proven at the level, and should improve second up.

Biggest Danger: CALUMET

Still unexposed, excuses last time, and today might be the day he shows his full potential.

Strong Place/Value Play: SIEMPRE ARTURO

Won 5 of 9 handicaps, best at this trip, trainer/jockey combo in flying form. Could pick up pieces late.

Live Outsider: LIGHTENING COMPANY

Won this race last year and everything points to a repeat attempt. Will need the race to fall right, but has history on his side.
