15:15 SOUTHWELL – Weekend Winners on Sky Sports Racing Novices’ Hurdle (Qualifier) (Class 4, 1m7f182y).

·

This small-field novice has a familiar look with a mix of promising types, established winners, and one total outsider. Despite just five runners, it’s no cakewalk, and there’s a strong angle forming around weight, pace, and intent.

The pace is flagged as weak, which could be vital—this isn’t a race likely to suit strong stayers dropped in out the back. Positional advantage and efficiency over hurdles will count for plenty.

Strongest Contender: KIENTZHEIM (Nicky Henderson / Nico de Boinville)

Timeform Rating: 139p
She’s the standout on adjusted figures and may have been underestimated after her third at Newbury, where she didn’t jump fluently and still shaped well enough behind a useful winner. That was a deeper race than this, and crucially, she gets 10lb from Serious Challenge due to novice status.

She’s bred to be smart – a half-sister to Epatante – and she’s already shown enough in France and at Kempton to mark her out as a likely future winner in this sphere. The Henderson team doesn’t mess about when placing these types in small-field races at sharp tracks – this has all the hallmarks of a “Go Day” for a mare who’s ready to capitalise on weight and class.

> Timeform Note: “Jumping lacked some fluency when third at Newbury in February, but she remains with plenty of potential now returned to a sharp 2m and can make the most of the weight she receives.”

Main Dangers

1. Serious Challenge (Fergal O’Brien / Jonathan Burke)

Timeform Rating: 131p
He’s unbeaten in his last two and looked really impressive at Ayr. However, he’s carrying a double penalty now and faces rivals getting lumps of weight. Still, the engine’s there, and O’Brien’s runners continue to go well. He might try to control a slow pace from the front.

> Go Day? Yes – but this might be more of a “test the water under the weight” outing before handicapping.
Timeform Note: “Progressive… open to further improvement.”

2. John Barbour (Fergal O’Brien / J. Hogan)

Timeform Rating: 120p
Don’t ignore the second O’Brien runner. He was well on top at Newbury in a small field, and while this is a rise in class, he remains open to plenty more with the tongue tie working well. He’s another who will be suited by a race lacking a strong early gallop. If the pace is messy, he could sit handy and pounce.

> Handbrake Job? Doesn’t feel like one. Yard has booked a 3lb claimer who’s done well for them – likely trying.

Other Runners Briefly

Sorceleur (Paul Nicholls / Harry Cobden) – Smart early wins, placed in deeper races, but held up and may be outpaced in a tactical dash. Returns to a more suitable trip but likely one run off the speed in a race that won’t collapse. Possibly a “run-on-late” third.

> Timeform Note: “Best work finish… will benefit from return to further than 2m.”

Monticello (Clive Boultbee-Brooks / Ned Fox) – No chance on anything seen to date. Handbrake welded on.

Trainer Watch

Henderson: While no specific note of him winning this race previously, this is the kind of sharp novice he farms. His strike rate with mares carrying weight allowances in novice hurdles is exceptional.

Fergal O’Brien: Dual-handed, and clearly fancies a win – but also possibly playing the long game with Serious Challenge now carrying penalties.

Nicholls: Cobden booked, always a sign of intent, but this might be more about a learning day for Sorceleur than a win-now job.

Final Word

This looks a well-set-up scenario for Kientzheim to score. She gets plenty of weight, has track/trip to suit, and remains unexposed. John Barbour is the sneaky danger – improving, ignored by the market, and could mug them if the pace collapses or the front pair underperform. Serious Challenge deserves respect but has it all to do under the weight.
