16:45 Newmarket (Rowley) – bet365 British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Class 2, 1m)

·

This race has thrown up several high-end fillies in recent years, including Silver Lady, Crenelle, Maqsad, and Swiss Range. It’s a contest often targeted by the elite — notably Appleby, Gosden, and Balding, who all run strong types again this year.

With a “Very Weak” pace forecast, tactical speed and positioning will be vital, especially over the Rowley Mile where prominent racers often control steadily-run maidens.

Strongest Contender: PELEAN (John & Thady Gosden / Robert Havlin)

Timeform TFR: 86p
Form: 2nd of 8 at Southwell (8f, AW) – travelled strongly, touched off late.
Comment: “Sure to progress.”

Pelean brings a clear form edge to the table, posting a strong Timeform rating on debut and doing plenty right that day. She looked a natural — travelled sweetly, boxed clever near the pace, and only lost out late to a race-fit rival. The pedigree (half to Jersey Stakes winner Molatham) supports this mile trip, and with Gosden’s record in this race — including Crenelle (2022) — it’s clear she’s been aimed here.

Importantly, she’s race-fit, drawn to be prominent, and should be ideally placed in a slowly-run affair. Tactically advantaged. This looks a ‘Go Day’.

Main Dangers

VICTORY QUEEN (Charlie Appleby / William Buick)

Comment: “Half-sister to 2000 Guineas winner Coroebus.”

Regally bred Dubawi filly making her debut for Appleby, who has won this race with Silver Lady (2023) and often unleashes pattern-level prospects in this event. The booking of Buick and the bloodline suggest this filly has been showing plenty at home. She’s one of the most likely winners if she’s tuned — but 100-day layoff debut + no form makes her hard to stake heavily on unless the paddock or market speaks.

This is definitely a ‘Go Day’ — Appleby rarely misses when targeting this race, and her price signals stable confidence.

ZGHARTA (Andrew Balding / Hollie Doyle)

Timeform TFR: 84p
Form: 3rd of 9 at Newmarket on heavy – blocked late, finished full of running.
Comment: “Promise… kept on when not clear run. Should improve.”

A good each-way or place angle. She shaped strongly on debut over 7f at Newmarket, and the step up to a mile suits her pedigree. Balding is in great form, and this filly had “next time out winner” written all over her back in November. Off 164 days, but that’s typical for this yard — and the fact she’s back at Newmarket in this race suggests intent.

This could be a “sneaky go day” — well drawn, Hollie booked, and could fly under the radar with the flashy debutantes hogging the limelight.

Others to Note

GOLDIE TRICKETT (William Haggas / Tom Marquand)
Sister to G1-winner Saffron Beach, €1.65m purchase. Market vibes strong.
This filly could easily be very smart, and Haggas won this race with Maqsad in 2019. That said, no debut form means she’s hard to trust over the proven types unless the market and paddock say she’s ready. She’s more “go” than handbrake, but could be 90% tuned.

NAGA (Gosden / Shoemark) – Looked clueless last time, still learning. Probably the Gosden 2nd string.

MODEL YUKO (Varian / De Sousa) – Pedigree says middle distances, and Varian debut fillies are rarely revved to win maidens.

MAHOGANY BAY / TREASURED ANGEL – Look like “handbrake jobs”, likely outpaced in a warm maiden.

Trainers to Watch (Race History)

Charlie Appleby – Silver Lady (2023)

Gosden – Crenelle (2022)

William Haggas – Maqsad (2019)

All three strike again here and bring well-bred, well-placed fillies. Not just runners — they’re launching future black-type types.

Conclusion

This race often rewards race-fit fillies with tactical pace, and PELEAN ticks every box – high Timeform rating, strong debut, prominent style, trainer who targets this, and drawn to control things.

The main threats are the regally bred VICTORY QUEEN, a “go day” debutante from Appleby, and ZGHARTA, who brings proven track form and should relish this trip. GOLDIE TRICKETT adds a layer of intrigue but might need to be top-drawer to outpoint fitter types today.
