Every season has its breakout stars – the ones that quietly leave a deep impression before the spotlight catches up. One name to add firmly to your tracker for 2025: Almeric.
Trained by Andrew Balding and bred in the purple by Miss K. Rausing, this tall, scopey grey son of Study of Man has the pedigree, profile, and performance pattern to suggest he could be one of this season’s big movers in the middle-distance division.
Almeric made his mark as a juvenile under testing conditions at York last October, digging deep to win a soft-ground maiden that’s since worked out well. It was a race that hinted at stamina, grit, and a strong engine – all the trademarks of his family. He returned off a 185-day break at Newmarket on April 15th and absolutely tanked through the race over 9f, despite not handling the undulations that well. Once switched wide, he stayed on powerfully and was always doing enough at the line. The Timeform write-up said it best: “Will be suited by 1¼m+… sure to go on to better things.”
That’s no small statement when it comes to a colt from this yard.
Pedigree Notes
He’s by Study of Man, a Prix du Jockey Club winner with a deep stamina-laden influence from Deep Impact’s line. His dam, Alvarita, was a dual winner herself and has already thrown multiple classy stayers including Altesse (stayed 2m) and Alcaeus (1¼m to 1¾m). Everything in the blood screams “more to come with time and distance.”
The Bigger Picture
There’s already talk of the Prix du Jockey Club as a target – and it fits. 10.5f at Chantilly, often with a bit of cut underfoot, plays directly into his strengths. Before that, you’d expect to see him in a Dante Stakes or maybe the Classic Trial at Sandown or Cocked Hat at Goodwood. The team will want a fair read on how Group-level he really is – but on this trajectory, he belongs.
This isn’t just a nice handicapper in the making. Almeric is shaping like a future Pattern performer, with potential to thrive not just this summer, but as a four-year-old too.
