🏆 Strongest Contender: BACKSPIN (Richard Hughes / Finley Marsh)
Form: 92-31
Last Win: Visually impressive at Southwell, cruising into it before being ridden out late to score
Timeform Note: “Much improved… headway 1f out and led final ½f. Will go on progressing.”
This son of Hello Youmzain really caught the eye last time and looks the most likely to run to a new career top. He’s a strong-finishing type, which suits today’s expected pace burn-up, and crucially, Hughes has targeted this race with a spring 3yo before (ran 2nd in 2022 with Out From Under).
🔍 Verdict: Looks a go day. Improving. Best of draw. Rider/trainer both in-form. Go-to horse.
⚠️ Main Dangers:
KINIRO (Harry Charlton / Trevor Whelan)
Form: 94-12
Timeform Note: “Did well under the circumstances… not ideally placed after slow break. Open to further improvement.”
A quietly-campaigned type from a yard that often gets them fit and ready second run in. This is only his third handicap run, and both maiden/handicap runs have carried ‘not ideally placed’ or ‘unlucky’ tags. Drawn 1 is a risk if he fluffs the start again, but the market suggested he was thought better than the bare result last time.
🟨 Trainer strike-rate early season: 21%.
🔍 Verdict: Could be a plotted effort – signs they’ve been waiting for this. “Not ideally placed” twice is a red-flag-for-excuses.
COUL ANGEL (M Appleby / Lewis Edmunds)
Form: 4-3151
Timeform Note: “Showed good attitude… always holding on.”
Ran third in a key race for this (15 Mar Southwell), before winning nicely over same C&D. Beaten Flying Seagull, form boosted since. Typical of Appleby — sharpen them up through the spring and have them peak for a prize like this.
🟩 Trainer has run well in this race type in the past — especially Southwell -> Lingfield switchers.
🔍 Verdict: Strong form in book, but he’s more exposed than some. May be vulnerable to improvers.
MCINTOSH (James Horton / Adam Farragher)
Form: 214
Timeform Note: “Not seen to best effect… hanging badly left and losing third post (rider suspended).”
There’s an unexposed angle here, and the pedigree screams 6-7f. That Kempton fourth wasn’t ideal, but still ran okay despite throwing the towel in late. One run at Lingfield might’ve helped more than people realise. Looks the sort being teed up for a big run now back in trip, and the tongue-tie stays on.
🔍 Verdict: Screams each-way play. Improver profile. Was it a learning run last time? Could be ready now.
🔍 “Go Day” or “Handbrake Job”? Let’s call them out:
✅ Trying Today (Go Days):
- Backspin – 100% going forward; last win had all the right signs, and today looks like a peak setup.
- Kiniro – Multiple “excuses” in Timeform notes, classic pre-go-day setup, trained by a yard that times things sweetly.
- McIntosh – Lightly raced, had genuine excuses, and gelding op + tongue tie means they’re working on this one. Expect better.
- Coul Angel – Already proven at this level, and Appleby tends to get them rolling now. But maybe vulnerable to one peaking now.
❌ Likely Not Today (Handbrake suspects):
- The Actor – Breathing op, first-time visor, but form is flatlining. Last to Coul Angel. Hannon to Camacho switch, but not the stable’s MO to spring a shock.
- Tattie Bogle – Big field, poor comeback, trainer hasn’t clicked this one into gear this prep.
- Rock Hunter – Timeform’s “temperament under suspicion” is never a compliment. Often wearing headgear, been off for 4 months, and only mildly encouraging return.
🧠 TimeWise Tactical Take:
This should be fast-run, with pace pressure coming from Rock Hunter, The Actor, Soldiers Star, and Coul Angel. That strong pace bias sets it up beautifully for a patient ride on a progressive closer — and that screams Backspin.
✍️ Final Word:
Backspin looks the type to relish a strong pace and is on a firm upward curve. If you’re hunting value just behind him, Kiniro could easily pop up with a storming late run off what might be a quietly-cooked mark, while McIntosh might finally get the clean trip he needs and is a big player in the finish. Watch for Coul Angel to run his race up front — but he might just get outfinished late by a lurker.
