The return of Redcar’s early-season 7f handicap sees a competitive field of nine older handicappers, and while there are some battle-hardened regulars here, a few lurkers and returning types make this a race worth handicapping with nuance. The pace forecast is strong, which usually plays into the hands of prominent racers, especially those drawn low, with the draw bias favouring low to middle numbers over this trip.

Strongest Contender: CRUYFF TURN
Trainer: Tim Easterby | Jockey: David Allan | Draw: 7
C&D specialist with three previous wins over this course and distance, and he shaped better than the bare result when fourth here a fortnight ago on seasonal return. Tracked a strong pace, led 1f out, only to be swallowed late – exactly the kind of sharpener Easterby likes to use before striking on the second run back. Now race-fit, perfectly drawn for his style, and still reasonably handicapped off 84. Timeform notes he “has run well when sweating” and is a known horse who needs a run before peak form, so everything suggests today is a ‘Go Day’.

Main Dangers
CIRCE (IRE) – Richard Hannon | Tom Marquand | Draw: 2
A good-topped filly who’s been kept in training as a 4yo, and ran an encouraging fourth at Doncaster on return. She’s yet to hit her ceiling off 85 and is unexposed at 7f. Hannon’s horses often need their return run, and she looks ready to take a step forward. Timeform notes she “acts on all goings” and has “staying potential” – she’ll be finishing well if the leaders tire.
LIVIO MILO (IRE) – Sam England | Shane Gray | Draw: 8
Ex-Dermot Weld and new to this yard for just £13,000. He shaped far better than 7th of 7 at Pontefract suggests – he wasn’t knocked about after travelling well, and Timeform even highlighted his previous Leopardstown second as smart handicap form. Only his second UK run, and this could be a quiet touch if the stable’s had time to ready him. Dangerous at a price.
AL MUQDAD – David O’Meara | Daniel Tudhope | Draw: 4
Returns off a 7-month layoff, but last seen finishing a neck second at Ayr with cheekpieces on, having come from a poor position. His profile is that of a slow starter who needs luck in running and may improve again at 7f this season. The fact that O’Meara books Tudhope first time back suggests they might be trying, but whether he’s fully tuned is the question.

Who’s Trying? Who’s Not?
CRUYFF TURN – Definitely trying. Easterby’s horses often come good second run back, and he’s had a proper tightener over C&D.
LIVIO MILO – Looks like a ‘go day’ with a quiet prep and some real Irish form lurking under the surface. The Pontefract run screams “educational”.
CIRCE – Probably trying. Typical Richard Hannon prep: one to tighten her up, now ready second up.
AL MUQDAD – 50/50. Quality horse, but O’Meara’s don’t always fire after this kind of layoff unless primed.
PROJECT BLACK – 713 days off. Not today, surely. Massive layoff and changed yards.
THE GREEN MAN – Timeform flags slow starts and regression. Needs a miracle.
WOODSTOCK / LERWICK – Both have shown bits but look like ‘handbrake’ types off the back of down-the-field runs.

Trainer Watch
No obvious course winner trainers here with recent winners of this specific race, but Geoff Oldroyd (PROJECT BLACK) has a huge Smart Stat: +£68.65 to £1 LSP with his only runner at a flat meeting. Wild card angle, but surely aimed at another day.

Timeform Pertinent Comments
AL MUQDAD: “At least as good as ever” when runner-up at Ayr; “sometimes slowly away.”
CRUYFF TURN: “Usually races close up” and “has run well when sweating” – race-fit now.
LIVIO MILO: “Shaped as if better for run,” “not knocked about”, previous Leopardstown second.
CIRCE: “Creditably 4th,” “acts on all ground,” “good-topped filly.”

Verdict
CRUYFF TURN is ready to strike, with fitness, pace, draw and form all lined up. CIRCE brings unexposed potential and will be fitter for her comeback, while LIVIO MILO is a classic “lurker” on a lenient mark if connections are ready to play ball. AL MUQDAD needs watching in the market but might just need this outing.
