17:40 Gowran Park – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap (7f, Heavy, 3yo+ Fillies)

·

Race Overview:

This 7f fillies’ handicap at Gowran is being run on heavy ground with a forecast strong pace. That sets up a serious test of stamina and position — doubly important over this round 7f trip, which traditionally rewards prominent racers from low draws.

The track stats are clear:
Front runners at Gowran over 7f win 21.88% of the time (400-race sample) with a massive SP profit to level stakes. Horses that are held up have a horrific strike rate of 2.4%.

Let’s find out who’s teed up to win, and who’s just out for a spin.

Strongest Contender: INDIGO FIVE (IRE)

TimeWise Top Ranked 🏇

Trainer: J.J. Feane | Jockey: Wesley Joyce (5)
Draw: 9 | Weight: 10-0
Last Run: Won 15-runner handicap at the Curragh (heavy), led 2f out, stayed on strongly.

This TimeWise top-rated mare comes here in peak form off a commanding victory in similar conditions at the Curragh. She travelled powerfully that day and won going away, which screams repeat potential.

She’s giving weight away all round but carries it for a reason — her figures are solid, her recent form is clear, and she’s got a 5lb claim from a capable claimer. Yes, the wide draw’s not ideal, but if Joyce can angle her into a handy position early without expending too much petrol, she’s got the class to grind these into submission again.

Timeform comment flag: “Useful handicapper; improved when winning… led 2f out… acts on heavy going.”
GO DAY: Absolutely. Coming off a win, ground/trip profile ideal, and form rock solid.

Main Dangers

SHAVASI (IRE)

Trainer: Joseph O’Brien | Draw: 8
Front-running, lightly raced 4yo who makes her seasonal return. Won at Killarney and Punchestown last season and shaped okay when fifth in a small-field Navan race in the autumn.

She’s by Oasis Dream, and her half-brother was a useful 7f miler. Conditions suit, and Timeform note she “usually races prominently” — huge bonus for this test.

Joseph O’Brien has won this race 3 times in the past five years, and this filly has the look of one he’s protected in better company before unleashing in a target handicap.

GO DAY: Yes – front-runner from a top yard, back to 7f at the track she won at.

SARA VALENTINA (IRE)

Trainer: Dermot Weld | Draw: 5
Ran with real promise when third on heavy ground at Naas on return. Won a maiden by 4L last season and has form that ties in closely with several of today’s key players.

Timeform note: “Turned over when trading at 50% or less of BSP” – so connections expected better last time. She shaped well enough but wasn’t given a hard time late. That run screams “prep for today”, especially with Weld in great nick lately.

She has good tactical pace, ideal middle draw, and ground/trip hold no fears.

GO DAY: Yes – fit, nicely drawn, and comes from a trainer in red-hot form.

MATAARIKI (FR)

Trainer: Joseph O’Brien | Draw: 3
Won here last spring by 3¾ lengths and finished mid-pack in a Listed contest in France after that. Makes handicap debut, and though her class is undeniable, she’s a confirmed hold-up type. That’s a huge negative at Gowran, especially on deep ground.

Timeform comment: “Shaped better than bare result in France… wears tongue tie.”

GO DAY: Doubtful. She might need the run, and O’Brien often uses first-up spots to prep fillies for bigger pots. If there’s no race collapse, her run style gives her too much to do.

Who Else? Any Go Days in the Shadows?

INDEPENDENT EXPERT (IRE)

Trainer: Stephen Thorne | Draw: 7
“Horse for course” who won twice in 2024 and wasn’t disgraced last time in a monster Curragh field. Timeform notes keen-going tendencies, and a visor goes on today, likely to sharpen her up.

GO DAY: Possible – trainer’s got a sneaky 20% strike rate in 7f–10f trips. Watch the market.

BELLAPHINA / FAST TARA / HEART OF DARKNESS

All returning from breaks, low % win profiles, and either drawn poorly, held-up types, or with no real prep runs in the book. They’re all potential Handbrake Jobs — not impossible, but everything would have to fall into place, and then some.

Trainer Trends:

Joseph O’Brien: 3 wins in this race in past 5 years (Shavasi, Mataariki – both under his care).

Dermot Weld: Red-hot trainer form and excellent with fillies second-up.

J.J. Feane: No wins in this race, but targets Curragh and Gowran when he’s got a live one — and Indigo Five looks just that.

Summary:

Top Selection: INDIGO FIVE

Peak form, handles ground, and has tactical versatility. Needs to overcome the draw, but class edge and race-fit edge make her the one to beat.

Main Dangers:

SHAVASI – Front-runner, O’Brien angle, looks plotted.

SARA VALENTINA – Strong second-up profile, well drawn.

INDEPENDENT EXPERT – Potential dark horse if the visor works.
