A competitive renewal of the Gordon Richards Stakes where seven older horses line up for this Group 3 contest over just shy of ten furlongs on Sandown’s round course. The pace forecast is very weak, so tactical positioning and turn-of-foot may prove decisive. The going is good (good to soft in places), which should provide a fair surface across the board.

Strongest Contender
SEE THE FIRE (TF adjusted 133)
Rated highest on Timeform’s adjusted figures, this filly signed off her 3yo campaign with an eye-catching fifth in the Champion Stakes at Ascot, finishing better than most behind Anmaat. She already boasts a Group 3 win in the Strensall Stakes and her tendency to finish strongly could be decisive in a tactical affair. Trained by Andrew Balding, who remains in flying form, she receives a valuable 3lb sex allowance and, crucially, looks likely to be sharp enough on seasonal return. A strong contender if fully tuned up.

Main Dangers
ROYAL CHAMPION (TF adjusted 131)
Now unbeaten in two starts since joining Karl Burke, this seven-year-old arrives with momentum following comfortable listed wins at Lingfield and Southwell over the winter. He’s shown he can quicken in steadily-run races, which bodes well given the anticipated lack of early pace. With Clifford Lee retaining the ride and Karl Burke enjoying a prolific start to the Flat season, he shapes as a serious threat. Worth noting that he’s tactically versatile, which should suit conditions well.
ALMAQAM (TF adjusted 130)
This smart four-year-old progressed well in 2024, winning a listed race at this track in commanding style before going very close in the Group 2 Prix Dollar at Longchamp. He was finishing strongly that day, but the concern is whether the slow tempo here may blunt that late kick. Trainer Ed Walker is in excellent nick, and with Tom Marquand booked, his supporters will want to see market confidence hold. Without a run since October, it’s advised to watch the betting for signs of readiness.
AL AASY (TF adjusted 128)
Well capable on his day, and a dual Group winner last season, but he’s been a touch fragile under pressure in the past. While the weak pace should suit his smooth-travelling style, he’s an eight-year-old returning from a 181-day break and has been turned over at short odds before. William Haggas’s horses have gone well fresh in recent seasons, and he has trained a past winner of this race (Waldkonig in 2021). A market check is again advisable.

Others
ANCIENT WISDOM (TF adjusted 125) was well held in the John Porter on reappearance and may need a softer surface or stronger tempo to be seen to best effect. William Buick keeps the faith, and Charlie Appleby has landed this race in the past (Mostahdaf, 2022), so he’s not one to dismiss entirely.
ARABIAN CROWN (TF adjusted 124) returned in Dubai after a long absence and shaped as though he’ll come on plenty for the run. He’s a previous course winner, but today’s trip and pace scenario may not be ideal. Best watched unless notably strong in the market.
PEACE MAN (TF adjusted 122) has been found out at this level before, and while he’s consistent, he looks up against it on ratings.

Trends & Notables
Appleby (2022), Haggas (2021), and Gosden (2018) are trainers with recent wins in this race.
Horses rated 128+ on Timeform figures have won 9 of the last 10 renewals.
Seasonal debutants have a fair record, but fitness and market support often play a key role.
Pace bias at this trip on the round course at Sandown tends to favour those with a turn of foot, and disadvantages prominent racers unless the gallop is strong.

Summary
See The Fire is the standout on ratings and profile, and if fit, she sets the standard. Royal Champion brings recent winning form and looks well suited by the tactical setup, while Almaqam has untapped potential but may be vulnerable if the race turns into a dash. Al Aasy is not without a chance if putting it all together, but his temperament and freshness are slight concerns.
Watch the market closely for Almaqam, Al Aasy, and Arabian Crown, all returning from breaks—significant drifts could indicate fitness concerns.
