1m2f, Good Ground | 4yo+ | 0–78 | 10 runners | RTV
A competitive renewal in which a case can be made for several, though some runners return from absences and their fitness should be monitored closely in the betting.
Strongest Contenders:
SPIRIT OF ACKLAM (TFR 91) sets the standard on Timeform adjusted ratings. He shaped better than the bare result on reappearance at Doncaster when racing too freely in first-time cheekpieces after a break. He is a course-and-distance scorer and now re-opposes Can’t Stop Now on 5 lb better terms compared to their clash here last autumn. His prominent racing style looks an asset given the expected even pace. However, caution is advised with the Easterby team currently operating below their best, and the short price offers little margin for error.
SEA REGAL (TFR 89) is an intriguing runner making her debut for David O’Meara, who is adept at improving new recruits. Formerly with William Haggas, she showed fair form last summer, notably when second in a competitive Sandown handicap. A strong-travelling filly with proven ability at 1¼ miles, she has been absent 219 days, so market strength would be encouraging. Her tendency to race freely could be a slight concern if she lacks peak fitness, but she retains definite upside in this grade.
Main Dangers:
CAN’T STOP NOW (TFR 88) was successful twice over course and distance last season and returns from a 200-day absence. He typically races prominently, a style suited to today’s pace setup, and has won fresh before. However, he’s now 8 years old, and while capable off this mark, his trainer Iain Jardine has had limited success at this meeting historically. Nonetheless, he should give a good account if tuned up.
Interesting Outsiders:
CAVALLO PAZZO (TFR 86) appeals at bigger odds. He showed glimpses of ability last year, including when fourth in a stronger race at Redcar, and has dropped to a workable mark. Although he can be slowly away and tends to race off the pace, Jason Hart is a positive jockey booking, and a fair showing would not surprise.
SAMRA STAR (TFR 88) has shown fair form on the all-weather and is still relatively unexposed on turf. She can race keenly and has a habit of missing the break, but if settling better, she could outrun her odds. However, she is another for whom market support would increase confidence given a recent modest run.

Pace and Draw:
The pace forecast is even, which should suit runners who race handily. Spirit of Acklam and Can’t Stop Now look best placed tactically, whereas confirmed hold-up types like Sophisticate may struggle to get involved if the race develops steadily.
Trainer Trends:
Looking at previous winners, there are no standout trainer trends for this race itself in recent years. However, David O’Meara has an excellent record improving new stable debutants, and that is a notable positive for Sea Regal.
Pertinent Profile and Trends Notes:
Spirit of Acklam: Horse-for-course (C&D winner); improved last year; headgear retained today.
Sea Regal: Free-going sort; switches to O’Meara; no headgear first time for new yard.
Can’t Stop Now: Two C&D wins last year; returning off a career-high weight; regular front-runner.
Chiefman, Cougar, Sophisticate, Ayr Poet: All returning from long breaks (over 200 days). Monitor the market carefully for significant drifts or unexpected support.
—
Summary:
Spirit of Acklam has the form credentials to go close if settling better, but at the likely short odds and with his trainer under a cloud, he may be worth taking on.
Sea Regal looks the most interesting challenger, offering potential upside if ready on her first start for David O’Meara.
Can’t Stop Now appeals as the solid alternative from the front, while Cavallo Pazzo is a lively outsider worth keeping an eye on each-way.
