NARS Supports the NHC Handicap (Class 4) | 1m 6y | 4yo+ | Rated 0-85 | Going: Good | 8 runners

A competitive Class 4 handicap over the round mile at Pontefract, where a solid gallop is likely without being overly frenetic. Prominent racers tend to be favoured at this venue, and with an even pace forecast, those ridden handily could be best placed. It’s a race that often rewards race fitness, and horses returning from layoffs should be monitored closely for market signs.

Strongest Contenders

On The River (T: Harriet Bethell | J: Joe Fanning)
A consistent and likeable gelding who enjoyed a productive 2024 campaign with four wins, including here at Pontefract. He shaped well on reappearance at Ripon despite being hampered late, and will strip fitter today. Timeform notes that he typically races prominently — ideal for this track — although they also caution that he has a record of trading much shorter in-running without always converting. Harriet Bethell boasts a good level-stake profit when sending a sole runner to a meeting, adding further substance to his claims.

Partisan Hero (T: David Loughnane | J: William Pyle (3))
An improving 5-year-old who arrives chasing a hat-trick after wins at Kempton and Pontefract. He made all last time out in a similar small-field event, a style of running well-suited to today’s course. His Timeform adjusted figure is competitive, but it is worth noting that he steps into a stronger 0-85 handicap now, and will need to continue progressing to defy his current mark. His trainer is adept at placing upwardly mobile handicappers, and his prominent style is another positive.

Main Dangers

Superposition (T: Ed Dunlop | J: P.J. McDonald)
This Sea The Stars gelding opened his account at Southwell last time after an 11-month layoff and wind surgery. While the style of that win was impressive, he now has to translate that form to turf. His lightly-raced profile gives him potential for further improvement, but as a horse with just five starts, there is some risk attached. Given his absence from turf since 2023, market strength or weakness could be significant late on.

Leadenhall (T: Tim Easterby | J: David Allan)
A capable handicapper on his day who often runs well fresh. He met trouble in running on his final start of last season and might be better judged on earlier efforts. Tim Easterby’s horses can improve for their first run back, and with his stable not yet firing in early 2025, confidence would increase if there was strong market support. His previous course form is a bonus, and he rates an interesting outsider if tuned up.

Interesting Outsiders

Westernesse (T: David O’Meara | J: David Nolan)
A previous course winner who may have needed his latest run after a small break. His overall profile is consistent at this grade, and he can race close enough to the pace to be effective here. David O’Meara’s runners tend to thrive as spring progresses, and Westernesse is not without hope if putting his best foot forward.

Zoffandia (T: Keiran Burke | J: Josephine Gordon)
Disappointed on his latest start at Wolverhampton but had been progressive beforehand. Trainer Keiran Burke has a good record when sending one horse to a flat meeting, suggesting some confidence in his placement here. If settling better, he could be a player at bigger odds.

Pertinent Trends and Trainer Notes

  • Past Winners of this race have often been fit from a recent run; caution is advised with horses returning after 60+ days off unless the market speaks strongly in their favour.
  • Front-runners have a good record at Pontefract over this trip, particularly in small fields.
  • Harriet Bethell (trainer of On The River) has enjoyed notable success when sending a sole runner to a meeting.
  • No trainer with a runner this year has previously won this exact race in the last five editions, although David O’Meara (trainer of Westernesse) has a good overall record at Pontefract.

Final Thought

A race where fitness, tactical positioning, and trainer form could prove decisive. On The River brings the strongest combination of recent form and track suitability, but Partisan Hero appeals as a lively threat if allowed to dominate again. Superposition has scope but requires a degree of faith at the prices, while Leadenhall is a watch-and-react type who could surprise if strong in the betting beforehand.
